Between size, being older in his draft year, and playing last year as Pro guess it kinda would make sense that he would be more NHL ready than most post draft.

I just saw the OT for this and turned off the game as soon as Ottawa scored. It looked like Matthews got caught cherry picking. Was that the case?

Farang, He was not cherry picking but Turris blew past him in the neutral zone skating back when Mathews was puck watching instead of Turris watching for a couple of seconds.

doesn't mean an awful lot this early but it is still a good start.

Nylander and him make for a hell of a duo right now.

Not to put a negative spin on it but watching how well Nylander has been as a setup guy I can't help but wonder again what could have been if Quinn had just gotten a playmaking winger for Mats Sundin.

Nylander named rookie of the month. Just an incredible talent. Lottery-calibre player who probably dropped a few points because his dad was considered contact-shy.

Geez...did that really play a part? You'd think given Michael Nylander's body of work that it'd only help his stock.

Seriously, Nylander was underrated virtually his entire career. Involved in some of the most awful/lopsided trades of the 90s and early 2000s. Just look up his transaction history. Zarley Zalapski (the guy the Whalers got for Ronnie Franchise) is somehow involved. I still remember that Nikolishin deal between the Caps and Hawks...absolutely terrible. And I still rant and rave at how much fun the Straka-Nylander-Jagr line for the Rangers was to watch. Just wonderful to see them slowly, but skillfully, move the puck up the ice.

Makes me wonder how good his little bro is, Alex was drafted higher, was he not?

Yeah, I always keep thinking he was a sniper-type guy, don't know why. That was a brief time Sundin got a winger worthy of his talents, even though Mogilny was near the end of the line by that time. The rest of the time it was guys like Tucker, Domi, Hoglund, and a broken down Mikael Renberg.

They where both 8th overall picks. Given how well Willam has progressed post draft it would be hard for Alex to reach his brothers levels as he progresses. Far from impossible just less likely i would say.

Considering the type of backwater brutes that steer NHL franchises, I absolutely believe Nylander dropped a few spots because of his pops and size. Michael may have been the Swedish Gretzky, but he's always had the rep of being soft.

You telling me good Canadian boys Michael Dal Colle and Jake Virtanen are more talented than this kid? Not a chance. Nylander might even be better than the two Sams by the time this 2014 draft class fully graduates.

Stumpy Thomas and Berezin could score goals at a great clip, but weren't exactly elite setup men. People love to harp on this about Sundin but honestly, how many elite wingers are playmakers first? Mike Johnson was decent too. Dmitri Khristich was a big acquisition but absolutely bombed in Toronto. So it's not like he was just stuck with Domi all the time, he did play with some good to very good wingers, just not guys like Tkachuk, Kariya, Selanne, Bure, Shanahan, Hull...

The best besides Mogilny would have been the guy that they let go of on waivers...
