Sparks is a member on the near dead once active goalie forum. This was my quote to him in the thread for when he was drafted, now I know why I've been hyping him since training camp I want to be a prophetic. ;)

Nice!!! Didn't watch but sounds like a fantastic debut for the kid.

Good and steady with a couple of post that hit the good side of the bar he didn't need to be spectacular but he filled the space and was on his angles with decent all be it not perfect rebound control. He is a big guy that moves around really well, which sums up what most goalies are now I guess. really like his tracking and recovery speed as well his fight when he does find himself swimming.

Yeah I think I heard on the radio that his movement is really good. Tracking is so important now with all of the traffic in the slot and shots from the point, and it goes hand in hand with recovery and movement to adjust.

Dude's story sounds a lot like Reimer's. Happy guy who was overlooked, worked his way up from the ECHL to the NHL. Hopefully he doesn't get kicked around by management and coaching like Reim did. It was disgusting when the only people sticking up for the guy in the Leafs org were his teammates.

I can't imagine the current regime being as bullheaded and unprofessional as Brian Burke and Ron Wilson were. I'd love to see what the count is for players Wilson threw under the bus. I think the body count in The Walking Dead is lower.

Carlyle did it to Reimer. Wilson had legitimately bad goaltending except for Reimer(I don't recall him throwing Reimer under the bus, it was more after the Leafs made the playoffs and then traded for Bernier that that happened). Look at these lists.

Bernier going to AHL on ten day "conditioning" stint.

Guess if the coach will no longer play the guy he has to prove yourself somewhere. Surprising yet makes sense I guess.

I assume you mean the AHL. Or are they giving him 10 days before they run him out of town?

Ah yes AHL. All things considered he is effectively been ran out of town already and needs to play his way back.

Looks like Bernier's career is now in the hands of OTP's goalie preview author.

So, @GSparks40 starts his 1st @NHL game and gets a shutout. I had one going for 1:48 before sniper Curt Giles scored on my 1st shot. Hmmm.

@Panger40 @NHL Don't know if you remember, but there's a reason I started wearing 40!

Holy crap that's incredible on its own, but the Transformer sound effect made it way better!

Well, Bernier finally steps up when the Leafs need him the most.

Well...they can't be going all Buffalo on this now.

I really wonder if Reimer will be there next season. Talent and drive are obviously there, durability is not. He ain't in Pascal Leclaire territory yet but geez...

They don't have to shoot for the absolute bottom, but losing as much as possible is good for the long-term. When the difference between the 3rd pick and 1/2(just as an example, I have no idea how the draft looks after Matthews) could be Cam Barker instead of Ovechkin/Malkin, Bogosian instead of Stamkos/Doughty, or(and this still remains to be seen) Strome instead of McDavid/Eichel, then you really don't need your struggling goalie to step up and steal you some games.

There is a massive dropoff historically after the first 3 picks. Still a significant dropoff after 2.

Process and asset gathering is important for the Leafs. If the team plays well, guys improve their value, and the process is there but the goalie shits the bed, then that result lends itself to improving their draft position, which could easily be a better scenario than Bernier improving his trade value.

They are more interested in acquiring picks all over than out and out tanking. Tanking would be counter productive to the system building that is already in place, but that is not to say with the talent deficit they have that good system or not they finish last. I'm figuring on a pick in the 3-7 range and add that to Rielly, Nylander, and Marner and a very young and successful AHL team and I like how the season is going.
