I'd tend to agree with the writer and the stealth rebuild but if that was the case why swap 2nd for 3rd with Pittsburg and why trade Forsling last year for Clandening last year. That trade really bothers me now. Benning says he didn't want Clandening and Corrado in the 7 and 8 spots and neither able to bypass waivers. He should have been able to forsee the likelihood of that scenario when he swapped Clandening for Forsling.

I just think Benning doesn't have a clue.

I've tried to be open about things... But the last straw for me was firing Gilman. It should have been obvious to me when they signed Sbisa for 3M+... This most recent trade seems almost desperate. So we traded Kesler for Sbisa and Sutter; not sure if we came out even as far as cap space or picks... I hope the kids are ready because things appear to be shaping up for a major fire sale by the trade deadline.

McCann is part of the Kesler deal, so far so good but we still have to see what he becomes...............I'd really be okay with he everything he's doing, if he was at least accruing picks........but he's running through them as fast as Gillis but Gillis at least had a reason in that he wanted to go for a cup.

I liked the Bentley-Focus comparison, yet I feel for you.

Did Benning get trading tips from Mike Milbury?

The Bozak comparison is pretty apt--both guys are pretty meh players who, for some odd reason, have an uncanny knack of putting the puck in the net in certain situations.

That's pretty damning though when Bozak is actually BETTER in some regards.

 thanks, you're going to be feeling for us for quite awhile I think. Benning seems intent in crippling the organization for a long time. Friedman says they're close to signing a 5 year $4.4 million per year contract. Now it's Thomas Drance's turn to rip into Benning.

Quote:
Sutter, 26, is a pending unrestricted free agent who managed to score more than 20 goals for the Pittsburgh Penguins last season. He's a large and sturdy defensive centreman with a propensity for getting buried in his own end of the rink and producing even-strength offense at a pedestrian rate.
:D

Wish I could just mentally disassociate myself from the team and just share the popcorn with AV. :munch: and come back in 6 or 7 years when the damage has blown over and they're starting to resemble a team with a future. Only silver lining is the Vancouver market is not Edmonton. The fans will turn on the team and ownership is going to feel some serious pain. That should motivate them to get rid of BenLinden sooner than the Lowe/McTavish tandem trolled it out.

Key Gillis Additions:

1. Sundin signing which paved the way for Kesler to emerge a few years later.
2. Christian Ehrhoff. Key PMD that even Benning realizes is a key to success (Canucks have been desperately trying to replace him since he left)
3. Manny Malhotra.
4. Raffi Torres.
5. Chris Higgins & Max Lapierre at the deadline.
6. Tanev.
7. A small, inconsequential player by the name of Dan Hamhuis.

Key Gillis Moves:

1. Re-signing the Sedin twins
2. Negotiating cap friendly contracts which allowed the Canucks to load up on talent during the 2011-2013 seasons
3. Drafting Cody Hodgson over Kyle Beach (Who?)
4. Retaining AV and giving him the tools to succeed in a puck possession system when everyone and their cousin was clamouring that he was a 'defensive specialist'.

Gillis was not a perfect GM. His drafting record was great and his inability to properly deal with the goaltending situation mars his legacy.

But I'd take Gillis and his cold calculated plans over Benning's hot mess.

Bennings moves do not make sense either in isolation or as a sum of their parts. He is both limiting the ability for the Canucks to rebuild effectively while ensuring the Canucks are not a competitive team in the foreseeable future.

Not sure who you were quoting LP but the last bit I completely agree with and is the most frustrating part. Chris was right, he does somewhat resemble Milbury in that he seems to be making decisions with the intent to cripple the Nucks long after he has been fired.

Sorry guys.

And to make me feel more guilty, I keep hoping Snow still has a vendetta against the Nucks scorekeepers who he felt ripped him off of saves when he played there, and tries to make some lop-sided deal with Benning. I feel shame, but as you know, I went through watching my team on the losing end of trades for a loooooooong time.

At least with Milbury you could say his bad decisions were the result of impetuousness and impatience. It feels like Benning and Linden are taking their time with these decisions and STILL coming up with bad moves.

Don't get me wrong, with the exception of Matt Millen I don't think there's a single front office exec in sports history who comes close to Milbury's incompetence, but it's utterly incomprehensible what we're witnessing in Vancouver.

Wiesbrod promoted to Assitant GM............guess there always has to be some franchise for everyone else to laugh at. Now that the Leafs, Isles and Oilers are getting their crap together guess its going to be the Nucks

Quote:
Weisbrod joined the Calgary Flames in a larger role as their Assistant General Manager of Player Personnel on June 27, 2011 - two days after the 2011 NHL entry draft. Weisbrod's tenure in Calgary was largely negative, as the team looks to have bombed the 2012 draft he presided over, taking Mark Jankowski in the first round, and very nearly made a mockery of the entire Flames organization with the Ryan O'Reilly offer sheet debacle. He was fired in December of 2013, and joined Jim Benning's front office in July 2014.

Again, we don't know what exactly Weisbrod has been responsible for, however there aren't a whole lot of positive signs. His departments appear to have done their best work (Gaudreau in Calgary, Krug in Boston) when he's entirely removed from the equation, and there aren't a whole lot of successes you can point to and say "this was a great move." There's a bit of promise in players like Jon Gillies, but nothing concrete yet.

I suppose we'll now have ample time to find out if this track record is just an unfortunate run of bad luck or a legitimate reflection of Weisbrod's abilities.

If Bo Horvat can take a big step forward, this will all make a bit more sense.

Pronman ranks Canuck's farm system #15

http://canucksarmy.com/2015/8/11/pronman-canucks-prospect-pipeline-ranks-15th-strongest-in-hockey

Welcome to the world of perennial mediocrity. With expansion looming its looking like the 1980's all over again. Not so bad to ever get elite draft picks and just good enough to tease for the playoffs. Oh well, will give a chance for the under 30's to understand what being a Canuck's fan is really all about.

Canuck's Army did a 5 part dissection on how to build a contender this week. Worth while read.

http://canucksarmy.com/2015/8/21/building-a-contender-part-5-conclusion

Basically they have stated that it is your elite talent that puts a team in contention and they look through how to acquire that talent, via draft, trade or FA. best option is drafting in the top 5 and as I've argued before, that's the value of the tank. No guarantee's of course (looking at you Edmonton) but tanking is more likely to work than other options. Except CA postulated something I had not considered before. The value of having lots of picks in the 6-30 range. It's not as fertile as picking in the 1-5 spot but better than trade or FA. If a team does move vets out for 1st rounders and acquires enough of them they may actually be almost as well off as they are with the tank.

Perhaps this is the plan Benning has, I'm doubtful after giving up a 2nd rounder for Sutter but guess we'll just have to wait and see.
