Did Detroit piss away the local kid’s prime years? Yes, but he also shouldn’t have been the go-to guy. Not an elite player.

I think Yzerman (and also McLellan) soured on Larkin as much as Larkin soured on his bosses. This looks like a mutual divorce.
Unfortunately he looks tailor-made to end up in either Minnesota or Nashville, hell even St. Louis has the flexibility to make a run for him.
Re: 2026 Detroit Red Wings Offseason
My prediction: Larkin gets reunited with Holland in Los Angeles. Byfield, who will never be a 1C but still shows flashes of great potential, goes the other way.

Larkin reportedly has only three teams on his trade list: The Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, and Vegas Golden Knights (of fucking course).
Anyway, most people are saying Yzerman is gonna make him sweat and force him to add more teams if none of those clubs pony up what he deems an acceptable return. That would fit with past precedent, he waited out Steven Stamkos and it was Stamkos who finally budged.

Yzerman should just show him both middle fingers and make him wait.
Re: 2026 Detroit Red Wings Offseason
This is extremely disappointing. Larkin was a good soldier for a long time and the engine of the team. Never an elite guy but he just put in the work game in, game out. The Wings have been close so the timing sucks. One of the collapses was when he was out with an injury. To submit a list of only those three teams, though? It's an awful look. Yzerman is in the driver's seat here.
Thanks Chuck, E.L. and Harmy!
Re: 2026 Detroit Red Wings Offseason
I guess after this long he's no longer a prospect. Cossa gets shipped out for the 23rd pick that the Wings use to draft some skill in JP Hurlbert. A disappointing end to a pick that I had hoped would be a long term fixture in Detroit. At least they got a 1st in return.
Fans say that they still have Postava and Trey Augustine, but young goaltending depth is never a sure thing. I would have liked to have seen Cossa get some ice when the playoffs weren't a possiblity anymore.
Larkin has not been dealt yet.
Viktor Arvidsson signed for two years.
No decision yet for Patrick Kane.

Yeesh thanks for expanding that list to 4 teams bud!

If Wyatt Johnson is part of that...I'd be all over it.

Not sure why Dallas would do that one if it's just Johnston-for-Larkin, feels like that's just swapping in an older version of the same player. Both guys are merely *good* even strength players who are phenomenal on the power play.
Re: 2026 Detroit Red Wings Offseason
Yeah, Wings should have to sweeten the pot a bit in that deal.Pokecheque wrote: Mon Jul 13, 2026 1:28 pm Not sure why Dallas would do that one if it's just Johnston-for-Larkin, feels like that's just swapping in an older version of the same player. WHAT THE FUCK
https://www.nhl.com/redwings/news/xyu-p8vl9
Is the Yzerplan getting the boot in favor of the Shanaplan?
Why are they doing this now!? Right in the middle of the standoff with Larkin?

Re: 2026 Detroit Red Wings Offseason
Maybe it's because of the standoff with Larkin? Very weird to let the guy go through the draft and free agency in charge, and then shuffle him aside 2 weeks after all that's over with, unless something pissed off ownership since then.Pokecheque wrote: Wed Jul 15, 2026 12:47 pm WHAT THE FUCK

Re: 2026 Detroit Red Wings Offseason
I don't know, maybe they're starting to panic because the offers for Larkin aren't good so far and the only way to try and patch things up is to give Yzerman the boot?
Did not see this coming. At the end of this last season? Absolutely. After they missed the following season? Sure. But now!? After the draft and free agency!? Nuts.

Has to be because of Larkin. It’s a circus in Detroit.

Re: 2026 Detroit Red Wings Offseason
Reading RW fan remarks on HF, there's definitely some animosity toward Stevie Y, but there appears to be just as much vitriol over the possibility of Draper taking over and the fact that Rasmussen is still there.
Geez, I realize Rasmussen hasn't met expectations but I didn't think he was THAT bad.

Re: 2026 Detroit Red Wings Offseason
Larkin's gotta be a big reason but not making the playoffs for so long too, obviously. Larkin being a local boy, loyal to the team for so long, expressing frustration and then the trade ask. Not a good look for the Wings under Yzerman's watch.E.L. wrote: Wed Jul 15, 2026 5:53 pm Has to be because of Larkin. It’s a circus in Detroit.

And yes to the second point but quite frankly, this happened sooner than I expected.
I will say, Holland set this franchise back YEARS and Yzerman still needed years to recover from his mess. The Rasmussen pick is a prime example of that.
The pro scouting has been horrendous. Nobody within that area of the org should survive.

What a waste of a decade in Detroit. Now Stevie can go have a beer with Verbeek.

Re: 2026 Detroit Red Wings Offseason
I can't find where I read it but Helene St. James claims that it was Yzerman himself who essentially tendered his resignation, that this wasn't initiated by the Wings. I'm not sure I buy that.
