The rebuildish continues in Nashville, with Trotz sending out Johansen to Colorado and paying for the privelige. Better than a buyout.

Re: Preds are still good thread
The Preds got a couple of good years out of Ryan McDonagh, but they decide to pull the chord before he really starts to decline, sending him back to TBay for picks.
The defenceman who got the toughest assignments on the team is Alexandre Carrier, a 27-year-old RHD who's a UFA. I assume they'll re-sign him since they have plenty of cap room to spend, but on the open market I could see him getting massively paid.

Re: Preds are still good thread
Preds surprise us by extending Juuse Saros for 8 years. 7.74M cap hit.
They recently used a first round pick on Askarov. Trotz says he's not ready for the pros, but I'd imagine other teams feel otherwise. A rare chance to trade for a potential franchise goalie. Preds need a first line scorer, badly.

Re: Preds are still good thread
Nashville is NOT interested in rebuilding. They're the league's mini-Vegas in more ways than one.
After re-signing Saros, they swung big on free agency day, signing Steven Stamkos, Brady Skjei and Jonathan Marchessault to big money deals with lots of term.
Even if it blows up in their faces, I think it's worth it for them to compete for the playoffs every year and remain top of mind in Smashville.
They got a lot of mileage out of the Forsberg-ROR-Nyqvist line last season, but it's not sustainable. Marchy-Stammer-Evangelista will make the regression more manageable.

Re: Preds are still good thread
Give Trotz credit, he took literally nothing in return for retaining half of Ryan Johansen's contract, which was then traded again to Nashville for a 2025 first rounder and the now-gone-elsewhere Sean Walker. In the end between he looks like the smartest guy in the bunch.
I think these moves most definitely make the Preds a playoff team, competitive, don't yet know if it makes them contenders. But there wasn't gonna be a full teardown so this should do nicely.

Reports coming out now that Askarov has made it clear he will not report to the AHL, it's NHL or nothin'. So the impetus to trade him appears to be a bit quicker than ol' Barry would like.

The Nashville Predators have traded the goaltender, centre Nolan Burke and a third-round pick in 2025 to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a 2025 first-round selection, centre David Edstrom and goaltender Magnus Chrona.

Nice pickup for SJ, but I hope a couple of seasons with that trash D doesn’t shatter his confidence.

Re: Preds are still good thread
A tad bush league of Trotz to smear him on the way out, but at least he was man enough to say it publicly unlike the Bruins who conveniently "leak" something awful about the departing player to the press minutes after they've been dealt (i.e., Tyler Seguin).
Something someone on HF pointed out--Trotz went out and got Mitch Korn to follow him from Long Island, and almost immediately after Korn took over all things goaltending, they made a massive commitment to Saros and put Askarov up for grabs. That's interesting--doesn't mean that Askarov can't be a viable starter in the league but for such a highly-touted netminding prospect to be cast aside so quickly by one of the most highly-regarded goalie gurus in the business, well, that might be telling. We will see.
Don't blame SJ one bit for taking a chance though. If Nabokov is anywhere near as good as his one-time mentor Warren Strelow, Askarov will be an impact starter in the league.

Preds take a penalty I didn't even know existed, they iced the wrong starting lineup. Yeah...let's give THIS guy the Jack Adams.
Props to Seattle's Jessica Campbell, who reportedly spotted Nashville's error.

Last time I remember anything like that happening was in the '02 playoffs when Pat Quinn wrote the wrong number for Reichel before Game 7 and the ref wouldn't let Reichel play. They didn't get a penalty though.Pokecheque wrote:https://x.com/BR_OpenIce/status/1859439337986736166?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1859439337986736166%7Ctwgr%5E2b26d75bd72bed6fd76c1c70334bfd8e55059838%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fforums.hfboards.com%2Fthreads%2Fpreds-get-a-minor-penalty-for-starting-the-wrong-lineup.2980869%2F

Re: Preds are still good thread
Gretzky did something similar by accidentally leaving Patrik Sjostrom off his lineup card for the Coyotes, so Sjostrom just had to head back to the locker room, and he was quite pissed about it too. But yeah, no penalty there either. I had no idea that was a thing, I thought you could just ice whatever starting lineup you wanted!Chris18 wrote: Last time I remember anything like that happening was in the '02 playoffs when Pat Quinn wrote the wrong number for Reichel before Game 7 and the ref wouldn't let Reichel play. The Preds are no longer good.
TVA Sports reporter Renaud Lavoie was blasting Barry Trotz for the Justin Barron trade, saying there's something fundamentally wrong with their pro scouting if they couldn't tell Barron's game is a mess. Especially that Barron "wants to be" a defensive defenceman now. Not sure what he meant by that.

Re: Preds are still good thread
Wait, what? That seems odd, surely Barron knows where his bread and butter is. I still think there’s an outside chance he can clean up his defensive game but I think he’ll likely top out as a depth power play specialist, which isn’t really a thing anymore in today’s NHL.E.L. wrote:The Preds are no longer good.
