In buying out Bobby Ryan, the Sens are really scrubbing the deck clean for this rebuild.

White, Anisimov, Chabot, Zaitsev, Reilly, Wolanin, Nilsson/Hogberg the only guys currently signed to one-way deals. They have 43M in cap space to build around Tkachuk and Chabot.

They'll be in a position to add contracts, waiver guys, LTIR etc.

Andrew Ladd would look great in a Senator uniform! Well, he'd look great in a suit in their press box anyway.

Thing is, Melnyk is only allowing Dorion to take on contracts that have high AAV and low actual cash payments. That won’t really allow the Sens to utilize their cap space as well as they could.

Well yes and they have 7 RFA's. Money's tight any way you slice it.

This is a good year to take on guys with big annual bonuses since they're already paid. But I guess in typical Melnyk fashion, he's looking at the idea of spending money next year as a terrible idea.

How do you own a sports team and not want to win?

They are SO insanely under the cap they can sign all their RFAs and barely reach the floor. They could take on a very bad contract or two and get some good assets in return.

Loui Eriksson would fit the bill as it's only $3M payable over the next two years payable despite a $6M cap hit. Add a sweetener and the Canucks might have themselves a trade partner. But of course, Jimbo won't do it.

Sens acquire decent defenceman Josh Brown from the cash strapped Panthers for a song and dance.

I'm on team "The Sens won't be THAT bad next season."

At least they're finally ditching the horrid jerseys they've been wearing for all these years.

Sens walk out of the first round with Stutzle, Sanderson and Greig. That'll help things.

Sens get Matt Murray for a 2nd and Jon Gruden.

You need a goalie, and they paid nothing for a cup winner who's fallen on hard times.

Duclair nontendered. 23 goals and yer out. Supposedly was his own agent, which is a recipe for disaster.

Sens trade for a year of local boy Gudbranson.

Hey, Dorion, you want Paul Byron?

Guddy's still on the $4M+ salary Jimbo handed out. :Butch:

Connor Brown gets 3 x 3.6M AAV right before Arby's.

Chris Tierney gets 2 years, 3.5M AAV. Another digestible deal, could move easily for futures down the line. Ably took the brutal minutes that used to go to Pageau, but he'll be thrown to the wolves even more now.

The lack of depth on this team remains ludicrous and I hope Duclair comes back, but you can't say they're blocking the kids right now.

They filled the Duclair hole with a familiar face, Alex Galchenyuk.

I'm sad Alex likely won't get a chance to prove the naysayers wrong. What little speed he had on those two rickety knees is gone, making him a huge liability defensively and not a great scorer 5-on-5. Hopefully he can contribute on the powerplay and start to play like a wily veteran at 26.

Sens add some veteran grit and alleviate some cap woes for others by acquiring Stepan from the Yotes and Coburn/Paquette from TBay. They lost and gained 2nd round picks, too.

I think the idea is they're going to play the kids and insulate them with tough guys, which isn't the worst idea, really.

Paquette is a good 4th liner, also one of the dirtiest players in the league. I figured he'd be a cap casualty sooner or later.

So on one hand, they brought back the classic duds and are now the best-dressed team in all of Canada (Flames a very close second).

On the other hand, this rebuild took a very weird turn. It's like Pierre Dorion put on his Jim Benning hat and went Full Grit in the offseason. Gudbranson? Watson? These are inherently and objectively awful players. Why are you trading for them.

Also...the big splash they made in acquiring and signing Matt Murray is somehow not even clearing the low bar everyone had for it.

Did I see correctly that Brady Tkachuk took on Quinn Hughes in a fight? And lost...!?
