You don't even deserve to be called "The Panthros" anymore. Fuck you.

Patrick Johnson of The Province in Vancouver wrote an article that's mostly about the Canucks, but he saves some ink for Dale Tallon's Reign of Error.

https://t.co/24cP4xJJLX?amp=1

Quote:
Tallon was in charge for 10 years in Florida and none of his decisions ever took the team anywhere. It could even be argued that much of the time he worked against himself.

This is a guy who takes league meetings so seriously, his only notable impact is he spends most of them chirping his colleagues. A GM who wouldn’t have contemplated the idea of making an offer sheet to Nikita Kucherov — something that the Computer Boys were apparently considering — because so many of the NHL’s managers have their thinking stuck in high school, acting like teenaged buddies afraid to piss off the cool kids.

Where do the Panthers go now? It’s going to be a big battle in the world of COVID. Because of their tiny fan base, they’re already heavily dependent on revenue sharing. It’s hardly the most promising scenario for any prospective owner or GM.

Forgetting to mail those qualifying offers may have been the best thing to ever happen to the Chicago Blackhawks.

But really, the #1 problem with the Kittens is Viola and the rotating cast of flaky owners the league keeps trying to woo into buying the unsustainable, bankrupt franchise stewing in Sunrise, Florida. Just move the damned franchise.

Tallon is gone, but his many long term contracts remain.

Quenneville gave up on Matheson, but at that price I'll take him.

You shouldn’t. He’s not good.

What happened to him? Is he just another Cody Ceci, a tools guy who got thrust into a starting role too early and learned nothing? He has the skating to be a weapon on transition, but yeah, just seems error prone. I wonder if he can be fixed like Petry.

Here's the thing--I don't think Petry was ever broken. Like Justin Schultz, he just needed to get the hell out of Edmonton in order to be utilized properly.

He's big, physical, skates well, and has puck skill. He has all the physical tools to be a top-end defenseman, but Tallon pounced WAY too early with a long-term, low-AAV deal (but not nearly low enough) after a promising rookie season. Turns out he may have the talent but the hockey sense is severely lacking. Also, he's dirty as fuck and prone to idiotic mistakes and penalties that cost his team dearly. He's more of a bottom-pairing guy to me unless he makes a major step forward in his game, which seems unlikely now that he's 26. The incident with Elias Pettersson seems pretty indicative of the kind of player he is. Pettersson embarrassed him, so he slammed the little guy into the boards and threw him to the ice. That should've gotten a lot more than two games and a fine.

And really, if you look at his rookie season, it was decent, but by no means great. Why Tallon jumped the gun when he did, well, that's one of many reasons why he's out.

His wife is Olympic gold medalist defender Emily Pfalzer (according to Wikipedia, she's won six medals in international competition, all of them gold, which is impressive). Maybe he can get some tips from her.

Matheson is from my neck of the woods and his family is famous for their temper. Thought it could translate into a productive mean streak but yeah, he's more of a hot head.

I only saw him for 2 games, but he looks to me to be a kid with top pairing skills/talent but the brain and intentions to prove he's an old school "crease clearing" d-man. Total moron. I'm all for throwing big hits, but not if they take you out of position, which he did a few times. Pretty sure that's why he found himself benched. That and taking a totally unnecessary double minor for cross-checking Nelson in the head, leading to a quick Isles goal. Being hot headed is one thing. Being thick headed is another.

The team has 20M in cap space but is being asked by ownership to operate at a budget 10M below the cap.

That means don't expect Hoffman or Dadonov back, and in order to make necessary improvements, some of Tallon's mistakes will have to go by any means necessary. They'll have to roll the dice on Tippett, Denisenko and Borgstrom.

Good luck with all that. Besides Barkov, Hubie, Bob and Ekblad, anything and anyone may go.

They could trade Chicago for some of their LTIR guys.

They opened the checkbook for Dale, he goes out and gets the most expensive goalie he can, and then they order payroll be slashed.

Viola is the worst kind of owner, indecisive, meddlesome at the worst possible times, and like Eugene Melnyk, expects immediate results the very moment he opens his checkbook. For a guy who wants everyone in the world to know he's a military lifer and West Point grad, he sure does panic easily.

Methinks Quenneville is sorely regretting his decision to join his old (and now fired) buddy.

Bill Zito named new GM. Longtime Blue Jacket exec, has interviewed for numerous other gigs. Best of luck to him.

I think he's as doomed as that franchise, but best of luck to him.

At least they no longer have a vindictive old fuck (who is possibly also racist) who went out of his way to spite analytics.

I thought they were being cheapskates by nontendering Wallmark, but they got Wennberg from Zito's old team on a sweetheart deal.

He also got out of Matheson's deal and a bottom pairing defence on a discount in Gudas/Nutivara. Nice job so far.

I find it strange that they sign a declining depth defender, trade for another third pairing guy, and then scoff at the price tag of a legit top-four guy in Weegar. Oh well, it’s certainly a better start than the last guy had.

Cats replace Hoffman on the cheap with Anthony Duclair on a one-year deal.

Cats will allow fans at their games: 25% capacity. The jokes write themselves.

25% should break last year's total attendance figures.

Boy, Quenneville don't mess around.

Reading reports that he and Henrik Borgstrom didn't get along at all last season to the point where Borgstrom has requested a trade and won't be in the NHL at all this season. In addition, defenseman Keith Yandle is being shopped. Still a good defenseman who put up 45 points on a lousy team, but is also 34 and has two years left on his deal at $6.35 million AAV (NMC).

He is also the current reigning NHL ironman at 866 consecutive games played.
