Yes he was definitely clinging to that life long dream. If this is not his last shot it is his second last.

Still enrages me that Babs scratched Spezza the night he would've made a nice return to Ottawa and likely received a standing O from the fans, just because he wanted to thumb his nose at the front office.

Season over.

Will it be an offseason of introspection or do they chalk it up to COVID unpredictability? Either way, they'll have to make changes on defence.

This team needs work. Morgan Reilly and Tyson Barrie...hell no!

Wonder where they go from here.

Dubas isn't free from blame here. As said before, they needed a reliable #2 goalie to take the burden off of Freddy, and failed miserably there. Hutchinson wasn't remotely good enough, and it really shouldn't be that hard to find an adequate goalie to start 20-30 games.

Some have said he also jumped the gun on Justin Holl. Honestly I don't know, doesn't seem like a bad contract, though perhaps a tad impetuous for a journeyman defender who, up until that point, was a career minor leaguer. Either way, he's not a guy you should be counting on for top pairing minutes.

It's probably quite concerning that Travis Dermott is not developing into the top-pairing option they need right now, and that Jake Muzzin simply can't stay in the lineup for an appreciable amount of time.

Lastly, I'm guessing the Mitchell Marner saga will end with a trade out of Toronto. He demanded top dollar, got well above market value, and then simply did not deliver on the first year of that deal. Now the Leafs are strapped for cap room and have way too many holes in the roster. If they can deal him away for blueline help, they should do it. He's a hell of a player, but he's not the franchise forward he thinks he is. Do I think he'll get traded this offseason? Probably not, but I think, ultimately, that's what's going to have to happen in order to balance this roster out. It is, as the thread title suggests, way too top-heavy at the moment.

I lost quite a bit of respect for Auston Matthews due to his antics last summer. Still a phenomenal talent, but he gots some growing up to do yet. I don't even care about the douchebag mustache and snazzy outfits, just carry yourself like the face of the franchise that you are, on and off the ice.

Matthews was not an issue for me he was by far the best player on the Leafs. D have no structure and nothing Dubas has done addresses that in fact his d move was to bring in Barrie maybe the most unstructured d man in the league. As well not sure what Tavares is like in the room but on ice he does not have the appearance of a guy who can wake a team up.

Dubas paid a premium for all his stars and does not have the budget to fill out the D. I can give him another season but his inability to negotiate has hamstrung his ability to dig out of the problem he has with the balance of his team.

I'm obviously biased against Tavares, but he seemed to be too quiet to be an NHL Captain to me. I know there are different types of Captains, and some try to just quietly lead by example. But to me, hockey Captains need to be a little more outgoing than he is. I can definitely say the Isles have looked far more like a team since he left, but that could be due to coaching, Lee as Captain, the rest of the team being pissed that he left, etc. Who knows? Could be a combination of any of those.

But I said when he signed that the Toronto media/fans would give him 2 years before they started to turn on him. I saw that he said responsibility starts with him. He's great at saying the right things (Sign in Toronto? "That's never gonna happen!") But his actions don't back up the words. Not sure what he could do better on the ice, he's still an amazing player. But he needs to learn to lead, and not just in his robotic, monotone way.

Leafs trade Kapanen and a prospect to Pittsburgh for a 1st. Good move for both sides.

With Clarkson and Horton off the books, the Leafs are expected to trade for LTIR guys.

I suspect they'll use that money to sign Pietrangelo.

Guess they plan for Robertson to be in next season. Why not.

Liked Kappy a bunch though but they had to thin the forwards that can play third line.

The Penguins have acquired forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Pontus Aberg, and defenseman Jesper Lindgren from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Evan Rodrigues, David Warsofsky, Filip Hallander and a 2020 1st round draft pick.

Interesting. Kappy ends up back with his original team. Too bad his hometown team is the Pens' arch rival.

Sam Kim, the Leafs new video coach, was the New York Islanders mascot "Sparky" from 2008-2011.

Lots of buzz that Toronto is going to trade Freddy Andersen and get a new goalie. Not sure they'll find anything better, especially with the defence half finished.

Long overdue quite frankly. A team that's as offense-oriented as this can't have a goalie that inconsistent who simply doesn't show up for elimination games.

Always liked the guy and while his straight line speed improved he never had the hands and agility. Maybe in the right system he can still be an NHL player.

For a team at the razors edge of the cap, I think the Leafs had an underrated offseason.

Thornton and Spezza are slow but with lots of back-to-backs coming they can sub each other. I think Brodie will be a better fit than Barrie. Robertson and Lehtonen are the wild cards to me.
