All the major players coming back. Were able to bring back Carlson. No impact new additions, but some intriguing new guys: Shumakov, Gersich, Johansen, Ikonen and Samsonov replacing Grubbauer.

They've also been partying a lot. Gotta expect a bit of a hangover.

I say yes, but probably not.

Rookie coach. Could work really easily for him as there's a built-in work ethic, or he could have a hard time convincing the defending champs that they need to keep working hard to get back there.

I wouldn't bet on it...so many things had to go right for them to win it the first time, which makes their run all the more remarkable. But no Grubauer and no Trotz? Hmmmm...they still have gobs of talent but I think the East is too tough.

His listed weight on the NHL site, which I assume is from last year, is 235, so it's not like it's a huge stretch.

 Are you serious? Wow that's one big dude. He's not that tall is he? Like 6'3 with platform sneakers on?

The over under just went up to 251.

I hope he gets at least 20 but I suppose we should be okay with 10. I'm guessing they'll somehow manage to piss everyone off with, like, five or something.

They cannot, but I think it was less about a hangover than just meeting a really hot team.

Going forward, though, the Caps are closer to the brink than I thought. Backstrom has one year left on his very team friendly deal. He'll be a free agent at 32, but he'll get paid. They'll probably make him a Cap for life, but it won't be cheap. Holtby has only one year left too. Bet they're hoping and praying Copley and Samsonov keep improving, but they might also be forced to keep him for loyalty reasons.

Ovi, believe it or not, has only two years left on his deal. Can't even imagine what a 35-year-old Ovi would get on the open market.

Vrana and Burkowsky stopped underachieving right around contract time. They're RFAs and about to get paid. Guessing Andre goes if they can't make the cap. BTW, the Caps had to defer bonuses to get under the cap, so they'll lose 1.15M on next year's cap number.

Wash Post says they might look to trade M-NTC Niskanen and got Jensen as his replacement. Matt had a down year but only makes 5.75M.

I don't know what's stranger, the fact that Brooks Orpik was bought out and re-signed for 1 year with bonuses, or that he actually fulfilled them.

Caps re-sign Vrana and now they've got 21 players signed with 1M left in cap space. Djoos and Stephensen are RFAs and kinda decent players, so something's gotta give, even if it's just someone getting hurt or sent down.

Kind of a shame Devante Smith-Pelly signed at a big discount last offseason and still got forced out. I'm guessing he's in PTO territory now.

The party is still going in Washington: Kuznetsov banned from international hockey for 4 years for snorting cocaine on camera.

Team's still deep, wouldn't count them out.

That was just icing sugar.
