Sometimes it's better to have the cap room and not blow it on July 1st. Remember, his last big free agent pickup was Karl "Ironman" Alzner.

Exactly. Not a single player signed yesterday that I felt would vault the Canadiens into contender status, including Duchene. Still too far away.

There's still a glut of 7-10M AAV RFAs that need to sign, and when they do, some lesser RFAs may go on the block. I'd be thrilled if the Habs walked away with a Bennett/Kerfoot/Gusev type at forward and a solid defenceman, even if it's just a Hutton.

I'm getting some disgruntled Hab fan tailwind on Twitter this morning. It's Tuesday guys. Bergevin isn't on the beach just yet.

Habs sign LD Ben Chiarot to a 3 year, 3.5M AAV.

Half a mil and a year more than I would've liked.

Habs needed a depth LD and had money to burn. Chiarot fills those quotas, but doesn't do much else.

Not an exciting signing, but as long as he can play, unlike Alzner who can't even do that, whatever.

Another depth signing in Nick Cousins, 1 year, $1 million. Kinda curious...don't they already have more than enough grinders? Unless they're dead-set on sending MAGA Boy to Laval or they're going to swing a deal soon, I don't quite get this one.

Friedman and Pagnotta both report that Brayden Point turned down an offer sheet from Montreal.

That's one thing Bergy doesn't have going for him--he can clear the cap space but can never seem to seal the deal with top players. This reminds of the time, not that long ago, he let Andrei Markov walk and just went into the season with a gob of unused cap space.

As said before, sometimes that's a good thing, but it doesn't at all seem to be by design.

Pretty underwhelming offseason so far. Good return for Shaw but the cap space has gone unused. Chiarot is a more expensive, younger Benn. If Cousins plays more than 40 games in Montreal it means they're not a playoff team.

They also signed Armia and Lehkonen to mear identical 2 year deals. Armia automatically becomes trade bait if they need to make a cap dump.

They're at 46/50 contracts signed and the team is still a little shapeless. Gotta think they'll move out someone if they bring someone in.

The Markov/Radulov offseason was brutal. Played hard ball with both and ended up with Alzner. Team quickly tanked after that.

Although Bergy and Molson would never admit it, they've been in a quasi-rebuild around Price and Weber ever since. Bergy wants as little salary on the books for the expansion draft, the next lockout and for the time Kk and Poehling need new deals. In the meantime he'll toss a hail mary to Aho just in case. No point going for lesser guys until you know what you have in your prospects, but it makes for boring hockey in the meantime.

Drouin-Domi-Gallagher
Tatar-Danault-Lehkonen
Byron-Kotkaniemi-Armia
Cousins-Poehling-Weal
Thompson

Mete-Weber
Kulak-Petry
Chiarot-Juulsen
Reilly, Folin

Pricekaid

As you can see, they've got a lot of middling depth. Need another scorer, although Suzuki and Poehling could be those guys. Ranked the D based on pairing possibilities, but they could use Chiarot in a top-4 role.

The Habs need more help down the middle non? (Hence the Aho offer sheet and Matt Duchene interest...)

I think Bergy was using his cap space to go big game hunting, but now that he's struck out I don't think he's looking to add centre depth. At this point, will they be able to find anyone better than Domi/Danault/Kotkaniemi? Probably not.

They have Domi, Kotkaniemi, Danault, Poehling, and Suzuki. They really shouldn't be looking to upgrade themselves at center, they have almost too many options going forward.

What they should be looking for is a legit puckmoving defenseman, which is the one thing they definitely don't have at present. Gardiner should've been signed yesterday, and at this point he may be willing to take a short-term deal.

The fuck are the Habs and Gardiner waiting for? They're an obvious match, and at this point I don't think he's asking for a ton in term or AAV.

This is the team that goes for the Alzners and Chiarots. I honestly think Julien and Richardson don't consider Gardiner a fit, specifically they don't see him working with Weber or Petry.

I'm of two minds on this. On paper Gardiner is exactly what they need, especially if Weber or Petry go down and they need a true top-4 guy to step up. They're weak on the left side and they need a mobile dman for the PP. He checks all those boxes, clearly isn't going to get a 7M AAV at this point.

Then again, this is still a young team that already has a old-ish defence. Petry is a UFA in two years and playing the best hockey of his career right now. They've already got the unmoveable Alzner contract and committed a decent but not extravagant amount of money to Ben Chiarot. Even with all their cap space, I think they'd rather spend it on forward help and keep digging for younger, more long-term options on defence. Stats-wise Kulak played like a top-4 last season. Mete has already shown a lot as a 20-year-old. Maybe they'd rather roll the dice with those guys first?

That's so weird. I think he'd be absolutely perfect alongside either Weber or Petry, especially Petry. But yeah, I see what you're saying.

A perhaps not so outlandish prediction making the low level rounds of Habs Twitter: Shea Weber ends up being the first captain in Seattle Sockeyes history.

Ostensibly from the hood, and in two years the Habs situation might be a lot different. Could be mid-rebuild, pre-teardown etc. Might not have a place for the current captain.
