Another day, another loss. This time in OT to the Blackhawks. Avs rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie it but an extraordinarily dumb double-minor penalty by Gabe Landeskog in the closing minutes of play sealed their fate.

I'm beginning to really question Jared Bednar's judgment.

Avs are now trying the problematic Tyson Jost on the LW with MacKinnon and Rantanen. If he can't get it going with those two, he can't get it going with anyone.

Avs are now 1-7 in OT this year. That has to be by FAR the worst mark in the NHL. It's insane how truly bad they are in the extra session. The only team they've managed to beat in OT was Anaheim and that was with seconds remaining and also on the power play.

There's actually a silver lining to all this losing. By losing to a whole host of the NHL's bottom rungs, Colorado inadvertently raised them up the standings a bit, meaning Ottawa ended 2018 dead last in the league. There's still a ridiculous lack of separation though, so the Sens could very easily vault right back up the standings with one or two wins.

Unfortunately, that also means the Avs lost a whole bunch of games (and a good number of them AT HOME) to very beatable foes. This could definitely come back to bite them in the arse should they make a late push for the playoffs and fall just short.

Avs went from a double-digit lead over Dallas in the standings to getting passed by them in the standings and now hanging on for dear life to a playoff spot. This has been a disastrous stretch.

All eyes on Jared Bednar, as Philipp Grubauer had another disappointing showing in the net, but Pavel Francouz had another solid outing in relief as the Avs tried once again to come back from a big deficit only to fall short. He has hinted that he'll start Frankie against the Rangers tomorrow but he hasn't said yet.

Fuckin' FINALLY...Avs snap the losing streak with a resounding 6-1 trouncing of the New York Grooves. Rangers started things off when former Av Cody McLeod boarded Sammy Girard and earned the team a 5-minute major. Avs promptly scored twice on Alexandar Georgiev. The Rangers would end up giving the Avalanche NINE MORE power plays, Avs would cash in twice more, along with a few goals at even strength...the few times during the game it was actually 5-on-5.

Oh, and congrats to Tyson Barrie on becoming the highest-scoring defenseman in Avalanche history. Hopefully he sticks around a very long time to make that record insurmountable.

Oof...Avs nearly double up the Jets in shots 41-21, and lose 7-4. Admittedly there were some absurd defensive breakdowns, but mother fucking hell, Phil Grubauer has just not been good, and tonight he laid one big fat turd on the ice.

No, scratch that...if he had laid a turd on the ice it might have stopped at least one of the weak goals he gave up.

Rookie d-man Ryan Graves making another case to not get sent down with his 2nd career goal. Don't see how you do so at this point.

Not sure how this ship gets righted, Avs will not make a panic trade or flip valuable assets for a rental, and that's fine. But fuck's sake, I wish they'd do something to shake things up before this season gets away from them. Unfortunately their first bet on the "goalie of the future" has been a complete bust thus far. Maybe it's time to take a good, long look at Pavel Francouz.

Unreal...the Avs just CANNOT slay the Fancy Stats beast. They outshoot the Jets by a ton, but give up seven goals. They're currently outshooting the Flames a ton, but are tied and were actually down by two at one point.

When they're good, they bleed shots against. When they're bad, they're putting everything they can on net and nothing's fucking going in. :fffffuck: :fffffuck: :fffffuck: :fffffuck:

Ohhhhhhhh boy.

So, the Avs drop their 2nd straight where they pull a Carolina and outshoot the opposition by a ton, but weak goaltending and utter failure on special teams doom them.

And this is the thing that'll be making the rounds tonight and tomorrow. Shortly after the Avs give up an empty-net goal, Nathan MacKinnon gets into it with Jared Bednar, even slams down his mouthpiece or water bottle (can't tell since the camera isn't focused on him) and then even falls off the bench. That's not good to see, ever. His frustration is reaching volcanic levels.

Oh shit...there's more.

Really, this isn't a huge deal, but it's just not a good look for anyone involved.

Apparently Nate said something that didn't sit well with Bednar, he said "Just do your job," which set MacKinnon off and he retorted with "I'm doing my job! You do YOUR job!"

While I don't love the lack of composure I can hardly blame him for boiling over like that.

Avs cannot just sit back on this one. Make a goddamn move. I mean, it sucks that they are dealing with some key injuries that are handcuffing them badly right now, but they could still find a way to shake things up.

The Avs goaltending is toilet water right now. Varly was a monster to start the season and now couldn’t stop a curling rock (.868%). Suppose with Grubauer in the mix, who has also been mediocre, Varly is good as gone next season.

Just give us the Ottawa first rounder and Howard is yours. Easy and everyone is happy(except Ottawa fans).

Yeah...while there have been some horrendous defensive lapses, notably in the slot area, there's simply no excuse as to how horrid both goalies have been during this month-plus stretch.

And yes, Varly is gone barring some massive shift. Right now the conundrum is figuring out why in hell Grubauer has been such a goddamn disaster. That's more alarming that seeing Varly doing what he's doing right now. A little fed up with him to be honest...the squad fucking brought in his hand-picked all-time favorite goalie coach in Jussi Parkkila, and he turns in efforts like this!? GTFO...

And here we go...

Ward: Never seen anyone go after coach like MacKinnon did

TBH I haven't either, but then again I don't recall seeing a player fall off the bench before.

This picture has SO much going on...it's kinda hilarious. Check out the two girls behind the glass.
