According to Seguin himself, the Stars haven't really been active in talks. Very strange for them not to do so, there's no one in the system that could come even close to replacing him.

That's nuts. PPG player and Spezza coming off the books.

All for show: they're talking now. Bet this gets done before camp. It's an easy negotiation, really: you're either cool with 8 years, 88 million or so, or you're not. Gotta figure out how to dispense it in case of lockout.

Ohhhhhh shit, here we go.

https://theathletic.com/738047/2018/12/ ... team-back/

If you don't have a subscription, a quick recap: Stars team President/CEO Jim Lites called for a meeting with two media members and proceeded to rip into the team and their disappointing performance, very specifically, the performances of Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn. "Fucking horseshit" is an actual quote.

To me, my popcorn! :viking:

Holy crap, F-bombs galore. Wonder if these guys are the toxic twins 2.0. Perhaps they need to be separated by a change of scenery. Personally, I'm loving the drama but this team 'should be' far better than they are each and every year for like 8 years now.

And that's with Heiskanen living up to the hype and Radulov paying off. Even Bishop has decent numbers when he plays.

This is the very best thing to ever happen to the NHL.

Owners are getting ready for the next lockout.

This is a positioning statement.

This wasn't said for the team. They said it for the league.

Manipulate public opinion against the players...
Either way. Dramatic times.

Ugh

Nill came into a tough, almost impossible situation. He was saddled with a pretty mediocre team with virtually no prospects to speak of (Doug Armstrong and Joe Nieuwendyk were pretty bad GMs, kinda hard to believe Army got another chance to run another team into the ground). The Avs were in a fairly similar position around the same time. Whereas the Avs decided (eventually) to keep it low-key and build slow, Nill went for it. Engineered one of the best trades in NHL history and turned the Stars into the premier run-and-gun team before this became a run-and-gun league. Unfortunately he didn't stick with it and now I'm not sure what this team is. He also did not do much better at the draft than his predecessors. In that ridiculously loaded 2015 draft he somehow managed to get one of the very few busts in Gurianov. And everything really went sideways when he and the organization panicked and hired Hitch (no offense to Hitch himself, who's a brilliant coach, it just ran 100% counter to what they were trying to do).

And now, we learn his bosses are batshit CRAZY. I honestly have never seen anything like this before. A high-ranking official of a professional sports team actually calling together select members of the media that cover them to do an on-the-record expletive-filled rant and publicly call out their best players.

I think Nill's fate was sealed as early as last season, but I can't help but think Lites will somehow end up paying for this as well.

Good observation!

A lot of stats guys on twitter were looking at the underlying numbers for them and their /60 numbers were pretty similar across the board to last season. People figure that the owners are looking at the top of the point lists and seeing guys who aren't Seguin and Benn, even though those guys are pretty inline with their career norms and not likely to see massive jumps at their age.

Then there are Stars fans who say that they look indifferent at times...

Then the owner was talking about getting to dirty areas to score, and the people pointing out that the data says that Seguin would be in the crease if he got any closer? Like, what the fuck?

Location: Too deep in crease.
horrible drafting and development means they do not have cheap gap filler to complete a good line up.

Amazing how many are actually siding with Lites on this one.

That's really something when ownership is trying to rally the fans AGAINST its two most bankable stars. I think this tactic is really gonna blow up in their faces, and really, it should.

If I were either guy I'd probably request a trade or for Lites to step down. Issue the ultimatum. If they wanna play rough, then play rough.

The Stars are playing a smidge better since their stars were called out by ownership. 6-3-1 in their last 10.

Stars and Ducks make a somewhat low-key deal: Andrew Cogliano heads to the Stars in exchange for Devin Shore.

I actually like this deal. Stars get older, but they get a guy who is remarkably durable, fast, and up until recently could score at a reasonable clip. Ducks get a gritty forward who plays well defensively, which is what a team that bleeds shots every night needs.

More importantly, two teams in need of shake ups shaking things up.

Well.................................................................................shit.

Stars beat the Hawks in regulation, 4-3, but not before losing Jamie Benn to injury in the 1st and brand-new Star Mats Zuccarello in the 2nd. Went down after blocking a shot, which I seriously think NHL coaches need to dial the hell back because of shit like this.

Anyway, Mike Heika reports the preliminary projections are four weeks. Unreal.

Esa Lindell locked up for six years, 5.8M AAV. Will be a bargain.

Heiskanen, Klingberg, Lindell is as good a top-3 as you'll find in the league, and I think they're favourites to sign Karlsson. Just a hunch.

The instinct is to add to the second line, and they'll do that too, but with Spezza off the books and Hanzal on permanent IR, they've got room and an elite goalie they need to ride right now.
