Yeah I can still see a bridge deal and if so I think that almost assures he becomes trade material for a RD.

Well I don't think they have to move him right away. Hell not even this year but if he doesn't want to commit long term at a dollar that works for Leafs then don't see a problem in moving him in time and for the right deal.

That all depends on what the "right deal" is. If he brings in a decent D-man, it's a good move for the Leafs. If other GMs think he's a pain in the ass who will just pull the same this again, he'll lower his own value. I guess teams will ask for permission to speak to his agent about a sign & extend type of deal if it comes to that. Or at least, they should.

I think it's become quite clear that he is a pain in the ass. Trouba would be a huge win for the Leafs.

Two weeks since last post in this thread and absolutely nothing has changed or even been mentioned in that time frame.

Starting to wonder how the Leafs can utilize his cap space next month...

Probably in part on whatever D-man they get in return for him.

Blame Tavares. His contract can't fit with all these other guys getting what they deserve. The guy is single handedly ruining the Leafs. Or so I keep trying to tell people. :D

Still give about 20% he sits but this comes to an end this week.

Never saw trading and letting another team over pay his salary(7+) as an option as that would end up being a weak return in a deal. It was sign him to a decent deal or bust. Yeah he could be traded after being inked but if he is it is with a good contract value and trade value.

Thought there was a deal on the table for $6.9M per over 3 years? Sign and trade.

Any who - Marner is emerging as the best playmaker in the league and will likely garner close to $10M with that in mind. Matthews will get his ~$12M.

The whole cap era has shifted. Big money to the young guns with longer terms attached and the aging 29+ UFA's get the scraps. All the more pressure on showing your value during the entry level contract phase.

Can't imagine him getting anything like 6.9m for a bridge deal, that would be a little high for a full term deal.

Well, deadline day.

If he sits won't know if it was worth it untill Marner and Matthews sign.

If he signs a bridge he has to be trade bait.

If he is traded for a weak return then over payed else where that will disappoint me.

$6.9M AAV across 6 years. Not bad for a two time 60 point winger.

Leafs somehow found a way to frontload it without violating CBA variance rules, that means the majority of the contract will be paid off in the first 2-3 years, making it much easier to move if they choose to do so.

Glad this sad, sordid saga is over and did not end the other two ways it could've ended.

Hair high IMO, but low enough that he could be a valuable trade piece.

The bonus scheme used to circumvent the cap on this deal is insane. Nylander makes $2M as a signing bonus today. He will make $10M dollars between now and the end of this season, and then he gets $8.3M dollars on July 1st of next year. So that's $20.3M over the course of the next 7 months. That's a lot of dough for the 6th or 7th best player on the team. Wonder what the vets think of all of this.

Yikes this is not a good deal for the NHL -- it exposes what a sham the current cap system really is. Bonus money is going to be a huge issue come the next CBA.

I'm sure the signing bonus/lockout protection thing will absolutely be the first thing the owners will demand concessions on. Can't believe David frickin' Clarkson got one of those.

But hey, if the tool is there, use it.

Saw Burk get worked up about him being the 6-7 best player on the Leafs thing and just do not see how that has any bearing on his worth. Sure it likely means you deal the player though. His value to an internal cap team this off season should be real high after the Leafs pay the bonus money.
