From the sounds of things, Tampa wanted to commit to a contract and Yzerman wasn't sure what he wanted to do so they went forward with the succession plan. And really, after everything that they went through with Stamkos(and to some extent Drouin), it would have been another storm with Yzerman being on the last year of his contract. Out with a surprise rather than a constant cloud and media attention over the course of the season.
So he's coming home to Detroit for now.
People keep talking about Holland's contract status and having a year longer than Yzerman's. That shouldn't matter one fucking bit, really. If Yzerman's your guy then you move Holland upstairs and work out the details.
