Line up rough up as it stands now counting RFA

Hyman - Matthews - Nylander
Marleau - Kadri - Marner
Johnsson - Lindholm- Kapanen
Brown - Gauthier - Martin

Rielly - Hainsey
Gardiner - Zaitsev
Dermott - Carrick

Andersen
McElhenney

Not sure what I expect. They are at least talking to Tavares so guess to some unknown degree are making an attempt and that would certainly alter the plan going forward. failing him I guess they target 3rd line center, top four RD, and wing depth. Could move Nylander to 3rd line center and look for a higher level winger to move in to join Matthews as well. As much as D needs to be upgraded do not think this off season will present that opportunity and forcing in the wrong fit is not good.

Really if Tavares was to work out you look to trade maybe a Nylander for D. They have some cap space to spend so in the likelihood they miss out on Tavares maybe keep cap space into season to get some expiring help in deals or maybe some one year contracts for looked over guys out to prove themselves. The trap I hope they avoid is locking up money long term on anything not a significant piece, they may as well keep flexible to see what happens next off season with some big time D men potentially hitting the market.

I hope you'll understand that I hope the Leafs don't win a cup for at least 7 more years.
To ensure it, I'm going to put money on them. I hear their current Cup odds are 7:1. I'm going to put $91 on the fuckers.
You have a good sense of humor, so I hope you'll understand it all.

Hayley Wickenheiser added to the Leafs staff as Assistant Director of Player Development.

Kinda ridiculous it's only happening now, but we know the NHL is run by cavemen so I won't beat a dead horse here.

I have been hearing of some ongoing tension between Auston and Babcock, which is the reason he flew to Phoenix this summer and didn't give Auston a letter. Any more insider information from over the Hounse?

Must be a slow news time when the only drama the Toranna writers can come up with is "Why doesn't Auston have a letter on his sweater!?!?"

The way I see it being planned is let Tavares and Matthews play out till Marleau is done and who ever seems like the leader going forward becomes the C the other gets the A. No big deal.

Leaders are leaders from my sons house league to the NHL, if a guy is a leader he leads letter or no letter.

Gardy as a UFA, one would think. Could see Nylander moved for a top-4 D eventually, but for now they have to bite the bullet and re-sign him. Do what Yzerman did: sign em all and sort it out later.

Heard Nylander's agent is using Draisaitl's contract as a comparable, which is quite frankly a joke seeing as Nylander is a winger, not a centre.

Ehlers and Pasta are the best recent comparables. If long term 6-6.5 seems right.

My guess for now at opening night lineup.

Marleau - Matthews - Ennis
Hyman - Tavares - Marner
Brown - Kadri - Leivo
Johnsson - Lindholm- Kapanen

Rielly - Hainsey
Gardiner - Zaitsev
Dermott - Ozhiganov

Andersen
McElhenney

If Nylander signs he goes in for Ennis and then it is a toss up between him and Leivo on Kadri wing.

Looks like the plan is to have all the big centers on the PP1 unit with Marner and one of Rielly/Gardiner depending on who is fresh. Should be a deadly unit.

Oh as well looks like Marner is going to be a penalty kill guy and would not be surprised if he leads all forwards in ice time. May already be too late to extend him with any sort of deal....

Marner is such a smart player and a puck hound. Should be great on the PK.

As well as a guy that has always QB'd the PP he seems good at anticipating the other teams passes.

That said I agree with what Brian Burke(ughhh hate saying that) do not like top offensive weapons on the PK due to shot blocking requirement and then injury risk.

Connor Carrick heads to Dallas for a 7th rounder, where he'll be reunited with Roman Polak of all people.
