Oiler elect to buyout Gryba, even though they could easily bury his puny 1M contract in the minors. An absolutely bush league move.

Three possible scenarios:

1. They're just being cheap and want to save actual dollars.
2. They're concerned about being too close to the 50 max contract limit.
3. Gryba murdered someone and it's about to be made public.

Torn Achilles for Sekera during off-season training. Out indefinitely.

He was hurt and bad last year, but I think their D corps needs him healthy and playing.

Have the Oilers actually done anything to improve their D for this season? Nurse, Larsson, Klefbom, (Sekera), Russell? Not great. Suppose they are depending on the further emergence of Ethan Bear.

Well, technically, they don’t even got Nurse right now.

Figure they'll sign a stopgap type in Enstrom or Emelin. But yeah, they've put themselves in this mess. Haven't drafted well in the defence department.

Worse than that IMO, they built their defense around a bunch of slow guys with limited offensive upside. Wonder if this is finally the year the water-carriers in Edmonton finally turn on Kris Russell or if he's still their golden boy.

Chiarelli should have already been looking for another defensive option and now it's the worst timing to try to fix it.

Chiarelli should have already been looking for another line of work.

Fixed that for you. :D

Jakub Jerabek gets a shot to replace Sekera. I'm glad Jerabek is getting another year in North America: he's not speedy or big, but he's a solid decision maker and I think that can at least make you an effective bottom pairing guy.

PTO for Jason Garrison, who somehow got a huge deal from the Bolts way back when.

Actually, it was the Canucks who signed him to that huge deal, ostensibly to fill their quota of having at least one BC Boy on the roster at all times. Tampa traded for him, then dumped him on Vegas three years later.

Was that a Gillis contract? Pretty stinky signing. Great guy but can no longer play meaningful NHL minutes.

This must be Chiarelli's answer to the Sekera conundrum.

Yep, it was. And Garrison pretty much followed him out the door as well--he was dealt less than two months after Gillis got the axe. Gillis's biggest error (other than working for Aquilini) was in not sensing the trend the league was going away from big, slow, physical blueliners in favor of faster, smaller puckmovers. And as we can see, the guy who beat him in the SCF still hasn't exactly figured that one out.

I honestly thought Chiasson was one of the Vancouver 4x3s.

New goalie Mikko Koskinen had a secret no move clause baked into his 1-year deal, for some reason.

Garrison and Chiasson earn big league deals.

Because Chiarelli was baked when he wrote the contract?
