Well I'll be damned. After being the guy who seemingly made all the wrong moves, Jim Rutherford gets to notch his name on the Stanley Cup for a second time.

Everything worked. Kessel, Bonino, Hagelin, and even Justin effin' Schultz became major factors when it mattered most.

Says a lot for the leadership on the Penguins.

Supposedly Malkin will be traded in the off-season.

Matt Murray signs a three-year extension, meaning the clock is now ticking on Marc-Andre Fleury's time in Pittsburgh. From what I understand he has a full NMC which means he has to be protected in the expansion draft, and they can't protect two goalies (at least I don't think). So either Rutherford has to convince Fleury to waive his NMC before the draft or...convince him to waive the clause for a trade to another team beforehand.

It would be the height of hilarity, but completely plausible, to see Marc-Andre Fleury suit up for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Way to go Malkin! Take out your own team's goalie.

Hmmmmmm...what's Rutherford up to?

Less than 24 hours after last year's best team (Pittsburgh) got swept in the season series by last year's worst team (Colorado) the Pens pull off two minor deals, acquiring Jamie Oleksiak and Michael Leighton. We know Ian Cole has been dangled for a while now, I assume Jarry is being shopped around for immediate help as well.

Two Cups in a row is nothing to sneeze at, but they finally ran out of gas last night against their Washington rivals.

The team is mostly set to go for it again next season led by Sid, Gene, Phil and Murray. Letang did not look good and at his age and considering the beatings he's taken over the years they might be wondering if he'll ever fully be himself again. If they do a re-haul it'll be on defence.

I agree with you, Eric. This was exactly the same place the 1999 Detroit Red Wings team exited the playoffs in their quest for a 3rd Stanley Cup. Ironically it was also a 2 - 4 series loss to Colorado for Detroit in 1999 although each series played out differently. With the length of the NHL regular season and the extra length of between 16 and 28 extra games in the playoffs, even the best teams just run out of steam in the quest for 3 straight Stanley Cups. Add to that the NHL Salary Cap, whose very design is meant to prevent dynastic teams from occurring. While there is the possibility of a very young, eg. the 1980's Edmonton Oilers, team winning three in a row before the salary cap starts taking away some of their important non-superstar players. I am quite dubious that there will ever be another 3 to 5 straight Stanley Cup winning team in the NHL.

I was shocked Pittsburgh could even get two in a row. The season is such a grind and as soon as you win you've got cap problems to manage. Even if Vegas pulls it off, they've got a bunch of UFAs and RFAs in need of raises, so even a team built from scratch has the cap to contend with.

Pens re-sign RFA F Bryan Rust to a 4-year deal. Some thought he might be used as trade bait, but I think the expendable piece here is Connor Sheary.

Pretty hilarious that there were questions about whether or not the Pens would "avenge" the beatdown Tom Wilson put on Jamie Oleksiak, seeing as how Rutherford literally returned Oleksiak to Dallas for a full refund not long after that incident.

Most points for Crosby since 2014, which isn't surprising with this slightly more offensive season.

Guentzel is for real and Letang, who I questioned might be done in this very thread, is playing well. After a shaky start the Murray/deSmith tandem is holding on.

The defence is shaky, though.

Really sounds like Kessel is not long for the Pens. No. 1 on TSN trade list, and the Athletico thinks a Phil/JJ for Zucker/Rask trade with Minny is in the works. Arizona (Tocchet connection) and Calgary also in the mix.

PPG last season. He's 31, but I could see him ageing gracefully like Ray Whitney, especially given the offence-first game he plays. His contract, once seen as a hefty sum, is downright quaint at 6.8M in 2019. A bargain, really. Only three more years.

Does Kessel have a no move clause? Read somewhere he doesn't want to play in Minny.

Kessel has submitted an 8 team trade list - apparently Minnesota not among them.

Isn't that the 2nd failed Zucker trade attempt that has leaked? They can't keep him after that.

Apparently Rutherford went on local Pittsburgh radio and admitted that once Kessel refused to waive his NMC, it came down to moving either Maatta or Jack Johnson, so Olli went. I'm sure JJ just loves to hear he was being shopped not one year after signing long-term with the Pens.

Simon - Crosby - Guentzel
Galchenyuk - Malkin - Hornqvist
Bjugstad - McCann - Kahun
$$ :snoop: Tanev :snoop: $$ - Blueger - Rust

Dumolin - Letang
Pettersson - Schultz
Johnson - Gudbranson

Martin
D-List

Yeah, Jimmy's got four more big rings (three Stanley Cup, one Hall of Fame) than I will ever have...but the last two years he's made some real :wtf: moves.

I will say that, overpaid 4th line winger and REALLY overpaid third pairing aside, those 2nd and 3rd lines really have the potential to make waves, assuming Malkin finds his game again.
