We finally have a firing, and it's not at all the one we expected.

http://nhl.nbcsports.com/2018/03/07/ron ... es-report/

http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/spt- ... 56099.html

Francis gets the Rutherford treatment, getting "promoted" to team president, which is likely nothing more than paid leave.

Not sure what Dundon has in mind. Some have said he wants to be Mark Cuban and be right in the thick of things, meaning the GM will be little more than a cap guy. Guess we'll see.

Francis was an okay GM, he certainly put the Canes in a better position than they were when Rutherford got "promoted," but ultimately failed to get the team a goalie and never pulled off any big signings or trades, so it's hard to really tell just how good (or how bad) he really was.

This team is close to being good, but they're still a big forward and a goalie away.

Damien Cox suggested the Vegas effect may have caused the new owner to feel like the Canes ought to be better as soon as possible.

They're interviewed all the best names, so I don't think they're going to end up with a scrub or tool.

The Canes are the exact sort of team that should be taking chances. They've been bad for a long time, but they've stockpiled plenty and have a great market/arena situation.

Apparently former Canucks AGM Laurence Gilman on the short list for Cane's vacant GM spot. He's a great hockey mind and a deep knowledge of the CBA and asset management. Hope he gets it. Linden should never have let him go in the first place.

As each day goes by, I am losing faith in TL's leadership. Gilman was really underappreciated here as far as I'm concerned.

Well, they should fire EVERYONE after last night's epic collapse against the Bruins.

No doubt whatsoever if the Canes have a goalie coach he knows he's a goner.

In reference an Elliotte Friedman post about Ronnie Franchise being re-assigned and forced to work from home now, here's what the Canes beat writer had to say:

Quote:
@LukeDeCock
The optics on No. 9 are terrible but that's the price Ron Francis pays for having the press release say "reassigned" instead of "fired." And if he were a less cautious GM he'd still be in his office. Any new owner was going to suss that out. Tough biz, even for franchise legends.

Seeing Don Waddell stand there dressed up like a Roger Moore-era Bond villain next to Bergevin and Botterill was super-awkward.

Waddell's starting to look like more than just an interim GM. I guess that means the Canes will make like his Thrashers and move to Canada in a few years. (I kid, I kid)

Francis is now truly fired, and apparently Joe Nieuwendyk, who I didn't even know was there, is also out.

Also, Dundon still doesn't have a GM. I'm guessing it's gonna be Waddell indefinitely.

The Raleigh paper's sports columnist basically said Franchise was the GM equivalent of flavourless oatmeal, so kudos to Tom for not playing favourites and shaking things up before it's too late.

Waddell ain't the answer, but it's been proven enough times that the old boys network sometimes looks after itself more than the product on the ice.

Waddell brings in his old buddy from Atlanta Rick Dudley as VP.

My guess is Dundon will make the real decisions while these two keep their egos stroked into the twilight of their hockey careers.

Dudley's a hard guy to really pin down. He's been everywhere and gets credit for some good moves (I think he was the GM of the Thrashers or something like that when they traded for guys like Byfuglien and Ladd from the Hawks) but he's also been around for some lousy moves too. This is probably best for everyone since Dundon doesn't seem interested in giving a front office guy the money or autonomy to run the show.

Dudley's T.B. draft tenure(2000-2001) was legendary with E.L. Svitov, Artyukhin and Alexeev. All your large Russian forwards are belong to us!

Like, look at the size of all these fucking Russian guys he took in those two drafts!

The only guy who played in the NHL outside of Alexeev, Svitov and Artyukhin was the small guy, Kharitonov!

Solarev played for the Danbury Whalers a couple years back! Amazing!

Svitov and Arthukin are still playing in the KHL! They can't be that bad, can they?

This Canes team needs to figure out how to turn all these loose pieces into a superstar and a goalie. No one's really untoucheable as long as you get something better in return. They've got tons of assets that can be traded for a star. A centre for Svechnikov would be a start, then a real goalie. Throw 12M at Carter Hutton.

One gets the distinct feeling they won't be spending to the cap.

Meet the new bosses, same as the old bosses: Waddell as GM and Prez, Brind'Amour as HC.
