Well it appears reports of the Wings’ demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Detroit the first team to actually make the Golden Gila Monsters look like an expansion team.

Larkin looking much better to start this year.

Bourne put an Athletic article out about Larkin having to make adjustments. He proceeded to do exactly what Bourne described as one thing to do - pull up after entering, getting the puck to Tatar who proceeded to shoot and follow up for the rebound for his 100th goal. He created another driving wide, circling behind causing two Leafs to collide, getting it to Jensen who spun it to Ericsson for the short side slap shot. Secondary assists aren't all created equal.

The Red Wings have come to terms with forward Andreas Athanasiou with a one-year contract worth $1.378 million. The Red Wings further promised Athanasiou that he will receive additional ice time along with more with time on the Power Play and the Penalty Kill. Athanasiou will also be eligible for Salary Arbitration next summer if he and the Red Wings cannot agree on a contract before then. It is further anticipated that it will take a while for Athanasiou to clear up his work permit issues and to get into NHL game shape.

The Red Wings must now create Salary Cap space to accommodate Athanasiou. Likely candidates to be traded, waived or released are Riley Sheahan, Luke Witkowski and David Booth.

Given how desperate Anaheim is for warm bodies right now they seem like an ideal candidate for trade.

I also heard there was some buzz about Teletubby going to Pittsburgh in the offseason, the Pens don't seem to be in a hurry to make a deal but ya never know.

I can't believe David Booth is back in the NHL. Kinda.

But they can't trade the human pylon and give away king, Jonathan Ericsson, who's already been directly responsible for two losses already this year.

What happened to Riley? Career started off strong.

I have no idea what really happened, whether it was the fault of the team or the players, or combination. You'd watch them both play and wonder how on earth it is that they had such awful numbers. Sheahan and Jurco's stalled development absolutely killed this team by leading to having to sign some of the horrendous deals for aging vets that they're stuck with.

Noted salad connoisseur and analytics expert Manny Elk posited an interesting question: Could any team beat the Detroit's lineup (Larkin, Helm, Athanasiou, and Nyquist) in a 4-man skating relay?

Did not know former Blue Jackets fan-favorite Tyler Wright was the Red Wings' draft guru.

https://theathletic.com/191108/2017/12/ ... red-wings/

Yes, there's a paywall. Sorry.

The article says that Wright likes to go for bigger players. Obviously there is no (literally) bigger example than Michael Rasmussen taken 9th overall this year. The article leads with a situation in Columbus when, in the 4th round of 2012, there was a debate between Kevin Roy and the bigger kid, Josh Anderson. That was the right choice.

This part is interesting though...

Quote:
“When the Penguins come in and go small, with speed and no one can catch them, everyone tries to play catch up,” Wright said, defending the 2017 draft. “Where is the NHL going? We're on the other side of that. We're trying to be trend setters.”

The problem is that, this offseason, the Pens tried to get bigger and tougher.

The Athletic had a good article about how the Wings have addressed their most glaring problem--a lack of capable puck-moving defensemen who just aren't capable of getting it out of their own end reliably. They now chip it up and out of the zone behind the opposition to take advantage of their biggest strength--their insanely speedy forward corps.

Are there any decent blueline prospects in the pipeline or are the Wings gonna have to try and bring someone in?

A shame Mike Green has aged so badly. Got to see him live at the Pepsi Center when he was just starting to hit his stride. Dude could fly across the ice back then.

Green can still skate...I love watching that guy with the puck still.

Weirdly because he's declined so much, Kronwall for a while was still the best of the bunch at controlled exits in the sample Iyer had. Veteran hockey sense?

Filip Hronek and Vili Saarijärvi are the two probably blue-chipppers. Both not big but extremely skilled.

Here's a fantastic read on Villi from Scott Wheeler, the Athletic of course.

https://theathletic.com/148119/2017/11/ ... ng-rushed/

Dylan McIlrath playing ahead of Villi...fuck off. They're saying that they have a hard time getting Villi into a lot of games because he and Hronek are similar. Play the fucking guy.

Hicketts is another one to watch who is small(but is physical) and doesn't have as high a ceiling as the other two, but is expected to be a decent player.

Custance says the Wings are ready to pull the plug.

https://theathletic.com/221885/2018/01/ ... y-to-deal/

Green most assuredly won't be back, but others are available.

Since it's behind a paywall, I'll just do a quick recap--he goes on to say BOTH goalies might be available and any player not named Larkin, Athanasiou, and Mantha could be had for the right price. The bad news is that goalies just don't fetch a ton in return usually.

The biggest need for Detroit is defensemen by a large margin. They need to get younger on the blueline.

Kenny erred so fucking badly the past few years in misjudging this team and they are cap fucked because of it right now. He so badly needed to move at least one bigger contract this past offseason using draft picks and didn't.

Next offseason, the follow players are RFA: Mantha Anthanasiou Larkin Bertuzzi Frk and Marazek.

Aka the total future of the forward corps.

They have a projected 12.8 mil cap space right now.

Kronwall has one year left.
Ericsson has two years left.
Daley has two years left.

They are going to need to shed themselves of at least two of those deals, unless they deal Mrazek or Howard. They have defense in the minors that will play on a non-playoff team, hell they'll be better than what they have. Villi or Hronek could probably already run an NHL PP better than Kronwall.

Nyquist has one year left at $4,750,000. I think you move him and you should get something decent for him. He's 28 and he'll be too expensive and on the decline(29) to keep after the 18-19 season. I've enjoyed Goose, but I think he's gotta go. Fuck the Abdelkader, Helm, Nielsen and Glendening contracts...my god.

Reposting thoughts here.

Given that he could have been had for free essentially, Holland got something. Still don't like the idea of giving up on a young, talented goalie like Mrazek.

Detroit had a massive cap crunch coming up, probably couldn't have dealt Howard and probably couldn't even have qualified Mrazek without corresponding moves. Buyout then sign Mrazek? Not sure they're comfortable enough with Mrazek to do that but now they're left with nothing after Howard.

Jurco, Sheahan, Mrazek...Wings are dealing guys in their mid-20s who looked really good early on and for whatever reasons did not develop. Dealing underperforming guys in their 20s rather than the underperforming guys in their 30s is alarming but a awful reflection of the contracts Holland has been signing.

Supposedly Ouellet was also being shopped and cited as needing a change of scenery. Same issue, albeit with less upside than the other 3. Fuck. Meanwhile, we have Villi in Grand Rapids sitting for fucking Lashoff and McIlraith. Brutal.

I tend to lean towards later towards deadline deals being bargain shopping, if they had a strong offer they likely would have taken it. Though in Green's case maybe the teams interested are waiting out their lowball offers on Karlsson and McDonagh and when that inevitably falls through they return to fair offers for Green.

Now Twitter is saying that Green will not waive for Toronto so they are out which can't help value....if true.

Svechnikov's first NHL goal a bit of a karma result. First he makes an awesome kick pass to Larkin who misses, then he eventually gets it again and sets up Frk for a one-timer that hits someone, bounces back to him and he buries it.

Larkin looks like he's rebounded after a sophomore struggle. Nice to see.

Holland's fate to be decided soon.

https://theathletic.com/284461/2018/03/ ... n-detroit/

I'm assuming if he's gone, then it's Draper who takes over.

I don't know why but I found this amusing.

Quote:
This season, attention shifted to the Red Wings. Christopher Ilitch attended the Red Wings midseason pro and amateur scouting meetings at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. His presence served a couple of purposes. According to multiple sources, he showed the front office support and let everyone know he had faith in them.
