The trade deadline may have passed, but the opportunity to improve one's team still exists in the form of unsigned NCAA players finishing their collegiate careers and European players.

First up, the Canucks signed F Drew Shore. Formerly a promising prospect in Florida, the 26-year-old spent this season in the Swiss League, where he went ~PPG.

The big college names are Northeastern LW Zach Aston-Reese and Union C Mike Vecchione.

Some names from Friedman: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/30-t ... -decision/

St. Lawrence offensive dman Gavin Bayreuther. Dallas the most aggressive suitor.
Diminutive UNH forward Tyler Kelleher. Likely NJ bound.

Aston-Reese suitors: Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Vancouver, Anaheim and San Jose

Two Russian defencemen also looking to jump over: Alexei Bereglazov and Viktor Antipin

Pens sign UMass-Lowell D Dylan Zink.

Preds avoid losing another Harvard draft pick by signing 6th rounder Tyler Moy.

The big UFA fish this offseason might be a pair of KHL forwards: Vadim Shipachyov and Evgeni Dadonov.

Quote:
Mentioned a few weeks ago that Las Vegas was checking out KHLers Evgeny Dadonov and Vadim Shipachyov. Haven’t spoken to the Golden Knights, but word is both free agents come with big asks. The first request should always be high, but it gives you an idea of where talks are expected to go. Shipachyov is believed to be looking for around $5.5 million per season, and Dadonov $3.5 million. Will be curious to see if any NHL team steps up at those numbers — and we haven’t even discussed term.

Habs win the Jakub Jerabek sweepstakes. Bobby Mac said there was a lot of interest in the 25-year-old KHL defenceman.

From Czechya (did I say that right?), he's small (5'10, 180) but sturdy and can generate offensive with a good first pass.

Also, the Pens signed NE grad Zach Aston-Reese and he lit up the AHL, getting 8 points in 10 games. I think we'll be hearing about him sooner rather than later.

Vadim Shipachyov, who has his sights set on the NHL, will not be a Montreal Canadien. He's fielding some big offers, Habs looking elsewhere.

The big rumour going around is Ship and Kovalchuk to FLA.

EDIT: Ship to LV

Nashville land undrafted Swedish forward Victor Ejdsell. Lots of interest in the 6'4, 214 centre, who racked up points in Sweden's B league last season.

"The @MapleLeafs announced today they have signed free agents Calle Rosén & Andreas Borgman to two-year entry level contracts #TMLtalk"

Couple of young D-men to add to the organization depth and hopefully develop into NHL'ers.

French F Stephane Da Costa eyeing a return from the KHL after killing it in the Worlds for the host team. I think he can put up points, but he's injury prone.

Hobey Baker winner Will Butcher will likely join this list soon.

No news is bad news as we approach the August deadline. Can't believe the hometown team couldn't sign him.

Three 4-year NCAA guys have elected free agency over signing with the teams that drafted them:

Denver D and Hobey winner Will Butcher (COL)
Harvard scorer Alex Kerfoot (NJ)
Maine centre Blaine Byron (PIT)

I understand the desire to choose your own fate, but it always seems weird to me when guys leave a seemingly good situation for another when the money's all the same. Like, will Kerfoot really find a better spot to crack a lineup than NJ, especially with Zajac out long term?

And given Pitts' salary structure(like CHI), guys on cheap deals get every opportunity to make the big club.

And recently Cale Makar has been quoted as saying he wants to stay in the collegiate ranks for 1, maybe 2 years. That already has some Avs fans panicking. No one wants a Jack Johnson situation. While it's a complete overreaction, losing the best defensive prospect this club has had in at least a generation would be absolutely devastating, so I can understand it to a point.

I'm hoping it ends up being like it was with Tyson Jost--he ends up tearing it up at the NCAA level so well, he up and decides that it's time for the pros.

Dreger is tweeting that Colorado has won the Alex Kerfoote Kerfoot sweepstakes.

https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/status ... %3D2381763

In all the Avs let one NCAA FA go (Butcher) and signed two others (Toninato and Kerfoot). That's a pretty big glut of forwards, even if one assumes some rookies will be starting out on the farm. They are obviously still preparing for a Duchene trade, but I'm not about to predict when/if that's gonna happen.
