The next hockey prodigy - and maybe the first 2000-born prodigy - is currently attending the same high school I went to. Joe Veleno is a 6'0, 170 lb 15-year-old from Kirkland, QC playing for the Lac St. Louis Lions Midget AAA team. He applied for exempt status to join the QMJHL a year early, but he applied late so they didn't even consider it.

Instead, he might head down to Shattuck's in Minnesota.

A bit of a shocker this weekend, as Veleno did indeed get exceptional status and was drafted by Saint John in the QMJHL draft.

First outside of the OHL. It's supposed to be anonymous, but apparently there has only been one player who applied and was denied, John McFarland. Pretty good track record with Tavares, Ekbland and McDavid for what is, according to Bobby Mac, a pretty vigorous process with many different factors both hockey and non-hockey going into the decision.

In his second season, 17-year-old Joe Veleno has won his first QMJHL title. He's no McDavid, but by all accounts he's starting to live up to his potential. A big kid with strong stickhandling skills and awareness. Although his numbers have been mostly average so far, he does have some believers out there.

This year's Mem Cup will give him a chance to turn a few heads.
