Oh I know...but the one comfort I take from that is no matter how bad the Avs are, the Coyotes are the ones even more pissed. They chose last year to have a better-than-expected start and ruin any chance of getting the most perfect franchise player they could possibly get.

Nolan Patrick is not some superstar, I know that, but from what I'm told he's actually a pretty good two-way talent, and if any team has a bigger need than the Avs in that department I'd be stunned. And if they don't get Patrick they have a shot at that Swedish d-man, another big, big need.

Of course given the new rules they could actually drop to something like 4th, right?

But really...when your team is THIS FUCKING BAD there are needs everywhere. Even if they land an top line center, they could always just boot Duchene or MacKinnon to wing full time.

Varlamov done for the season. His time in Denver (and maybe the NHL given his rap sheet) are presumably over.

All-Duchene talk, all the time in Montreal. Sounds like he's Bergevin's target.

1st round pick, Sergachev, Beaulieu, Lindgren for Duchene and a depth guy. (Along with whatever it takes to make the salaries work)

Who says no?

I could see that happening. But man, that REALLY cuts into the Habs' defensive depth if they don't have a ready replacement for Beaulieu.

BTW, I predict Bednar will be fired partway through his 2nd season. I just don't think even the best of coaches can make it through a season as disastrous as this and recover fully. The locker room is absolutely as toxic as its ever been and it's readily clear a majority of the team, yes, Jarome Iginla included, have given up.

At this point I'm resigned to losing both Duchene and Barrie, which would then completely negate the best thing to happen to this organization the past decade--the 2009 draft class. I think Duchene is sick and tired of losing and sick and tired of his efforts being underappreciated and constantly being dangled by each subsequent GM that employs him. He showed loyalty to the organization by signing a quick bridge deal and a quick long-term contract with NO trade protection, and in return the Avs have done absolutely nothing. He deserves better. So does Barrie. So does Landeskog. So does MacKinnon.

Soderberg, on the other hand, can go fuck himself. I'd say he should go to the worst organization in the league, but unfortunately that's the one he's currently with.

Iggy wants out. Shame he's not playing well enough to be wanted elsewhere: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/jarome-igi ... soc_trk=tw

Iggy can get the fuck out. While I can't just blame him for getting old, he signed a deal to be a lynchpin on this team. And he's been one of the biggest reasons why they're failing so miserably. So...GTFO, Jarome.

In other news, in with the new, out with the...somewhat less-new. Mark Barberio claimed off waivers by the Avs, who then turn around and waive blueline pariah Eric Gelinas. As if there needed to be any further proof that Roy and Sakic's deadline deals were a ridiculously stupid decision, it's further cemented now.

I think Gelinas could probably succeed in a depth/PP specialist role elsewhere, i.e., on a better team. Dude's got a good shot and decent hands, and has shown his mettle on the man-advantage before. Curiously, the Avs opted not to use him on the power play that much, instead going with...Francois Beauchemin.

BTW, this is the 2nd time Gelinas has been waived. The first time he cleared but couldn't be sent down because Erik Johnson up and got hurt around the same time.

One of many reasons I'm so bummed about this year is that it's leaving a real sour taste in my mouth about two veteran players I had been a huge fan of previously. But Iginla's and Beauchemin's tenures in Colorado have been, to say the least, disastrous.

Barberio was a surprisingly contentious player in Montreal. Some nights he looked AHL-bound, other nights ready to pass Beaulieu on the depth chart.

His solid wheels mask a lot of deficiencies in his game. Has another year left on his deal, so he could stick around.

I thought Barberio was a banger, but I'm assuming he isn't cream-puff soft like Wiercioch, Colborne, and Grigorenko.

Mind you, I don't mind Wiercioch. Just too many players like him on the roster at present.

At the very least he adds speed, which is something the Avs need desperately.

This move also helps the Avs fulfill one of their obligations for the upcoming expansion draft. They needed a defender not named Johnson or Barrie signed through next season with no trade protection.

The Hockey Gods have decreed that Eric Gelinas MUST STAY in the lineup no matter what.

First time he was waived, Erik Johnson down.

Now, the second time and with a replacement ready to go, Tyson Barrie is ruled out for today's game. :fffffuck: :fffffuck: :fffffuck:

And what does he do? Lays down on the ice so a soft shot can bounce off of him and into the net.

FINALLY.

Avs win 4-0 against the Habs. And at HOME! I'm stunned.

Hat trick for Mikko Rantanen. Conan the Barberio scores against his former team.

A small blip of light in an otherwise dismal year. I'll take it.

Ellliottte throwing out a Galchenyuk-for-Duchene swap theory. Bergevin would probably do it, given his coach's irrational hate-on for Alex.

If that happens I am truly done with the Avs. I don't see how Galchenyuk is in any way an upgrade on Duchene (unless they're throwing more in there, I haven't read the article). But even if they threw in Sergachev I'd be reluctant.

Duchene might not be quite elite but he's a legit top-flight talent and a player you can build around. What's more, the Avs have probably never had a more loyal soldier. I suppose though that he's grown quite tired of hearing his name in trade talks every fucking year, so he might be asking out. I wouldn't blame him or anyone else at this point.

I suspect the Therrien firing means the Habs will ride or die with Alex.

Too bad they decided to Ride or Die (and died) by choosing Therrien over Subban.

Alex Tanguay officially announced his retirement today.

https://twitter.com/Eurolanche/status/8 ... wsrc%5Etfw

Heads to the broadcast booth. This means that the only active player left from the Avs' Cup-winning team from 2001 is...Steven Reinprecht. He's currently playing in Europe.

An effort to distance myself from the Avs a bit.

I think the Avs will always be my favorite team, but I refuse to let their suckiness rob me of watching good hockey elsewhere.
