Apparently the Canucks are courting UFA Drake Caggiula, linemate of Boeser's at NCAA champion North Dakota. He was in Vancouver last week and met with the management group and Aquilini's. They also met in Grand Forks during the championship run.

Quote:
Caggiula's personal contribution was 25 goals and 26 assists in 39 games.
Unlike your typical undrafted college player that teams sign as a shot in the dark, Caggiula is a legitimate NHL prospect. He has top-six upside and could challenge for an NHL spot in training camp next September. He has a ton of offensive skill and instincts. He skates well, has a good shot, and reads the ice well. Of course with help from two great line mates, he had many shifts of dominant puck possession.
The knock on him has always been his size. 5'10 - 180

In the 5 slot looks like the Canucks will pick either Dubois or Tkachuk. It's such a crapshoot. The better choice is unknown, but I think they will go with Dubois in order to obtain depth at centre. I don't think Auston Matthews isn't going to meet the hype and while he will be fully serviceable NHL player, he won't meet the franchise tag.

Craig Button loves Jeff Brown's son, Logan Brown whose stock has risen of late - 6'6 Centre with great vision etc. and size alrthough he could be more of a Pyatt than is what the Canucks really need but they would be crucified for not going with the conventional wisdom.

Some players who went 5th at the draft in NHL history:

Rob Niedermayer
Jaromir Jagr
Carey Price
Phil Kessel
Luke Schenn
Dana Murzyn
Morgan Rielly

Some pretty decent players jn there.

Canucks trade Jared McCann, a second round pick (33rd pick overall) and a 4th round pick for 24 year old, 6'5, 230 pound, right handed D-man Erik Gudbranson from the Panthros.

You gotta give to get I guess.

Getting mixed signals from Panthers devotees regarding Gudbranson's development.

On the one hand, he was a poor pick at 3rd overall and is a sort of bulky shutdown guy from a bygone era. But he also improved last year, averaged 20 mins of ice-time per game and he's only 24.

friggin mind numbingly stupid, how much damage will BenLinden be allowed to do before they are fired. Giving up a potential 2nd line centre for a 3rd pairing dman because he is big????? :fffffuck: :fffffuck: :fffffuck: :fffffuck: :fffffuck: :fffffuck: :fffffuck:

then they compound the stupidity by kicking in a 2nd and 4th with a combined total chance of nearly 60% of turning into an NHL caliber player.

They can find dmen of this caliber in FA, there was no need to give up young talent and picks for a team in rebuild mode. If I was any GM in the league I'd be calling Benning regularly to see what else he'd be willing to fire sale.

Canucks sign Baertschi to a new two year extension leaving a little over 9 million in cap space. Open the flood gates Vancouver, here comes the offense.

So, it looks like:

Daniel / Henrik / Eriksson
Baertschi / Sutter / Hansen
Burrows / Horvat / Virtanen
Etem / Granlund / Dorsett
(Rodin/Gaunce/Grenier/whoever)

Edler / Tanev
Gudbranson/Hutton
Tryamkin/Sbisa
(Larsen/Biega/Pedan/whoever)

Miller/Markstrom
(Demko/Bachman)

Gonna be a long season... :steamingpileofcrap:

Former Avalanche player and first-round bust Jack Skille signs a PTO with Vancouver.

http://www.todaysslapshot.com/from-the- ... ck-skille/

This is actually a good move by Benning. Skille proved to be a good 4th line grinder after getting a PTO with the Avs last season, and the Canucks need reliable depth forwards. Reportedly he waited as long as he could to get the call again from the Avs but it looks like they want to go the PTO route again.

Well, sounds like Hutton will be one to watch at least.

After being one of the Canucks top d-men for the balance of the pre-season, Troy Stecher gets sent to Utica due to asset management considerations. He'll be back soon.

Anton Rodin doesn't look to be 100% and will likely be put on IR prior to Canucks announcing opening night roster. This leaves one roster spot for one of the PTO's or Etem, who is a slow starter and had a weak camp.

Quote:
With that, the Canucks have room for another forward, most likely Emerson Etem, to stick around a little longer. In addition, Tuomo Ruutu and Jack Skille are still with the team, and their professional tryout deals could turn into one-year NHL deals.
Still no word on Virtanen, who hurt his shoulder in game one of the pre-season and will likely start in Utica for a few weeks, before being called back up.

On defence, things get trickier but Canucks suddenly have options in the D position for the expansion draft. On D they will protect Edler, Gudbranson, Tanev and could expose Biega if he plays 19 games this season or Sbisa if he plays 29 - which is a likely scenario.

Quote:
However, as it stands, none of the defencemen that the Canucks would look to expose are currently above the threshold. The closest is Alex Biega, who played 51 games last season - he needs just 19 more, however he isn’t expected to make the club out of camp. Luca Sbisa missed half of last season with injury, playing 41 games - he requires 29 more games to reach the threshold.

Probably not the way Loui wanted to score his first goal as a Vancouver Canuck. But hey, they still won.

I just wanted to enjoy this brief, shining moment when these Vancouver Canucks are on pace for an 82-0 season.

Yeah man! Two come from behind wins. Stiff test versus St. Louis coming up though. Ironically, the Swede line haven't been the difference thus far. Brandon Sutter and some of young crew have.

Unreal. Three times now, down in the 3rd, they come back to win in OT. I could even see it coming when St. Louis couldn't put it away after spending so much time in the attacking zone.

Obviously I don't think it'll last, but you gotta give Willie Desjardins credit. He's going to find a way to win, no matter how unlikely or ugly it may be.

Very small sample size, it won't last.

Tanev, Edler, and the Sedins. The Canuck's are one serious injury away from competing for a bottom 3 position in the league.

Some are taking exception to Desjardins' handling of Jake Virtanen.

http://nhlnumbers.com/2016/10/28/the-ca ... limbo-land

Seems strange to me that a team struggling so mightily to put the puck in the net would be marginalizing a kid who might potentially be their best weapon. Slap him on the Sedins line and see what happens.

Definitely wouldn't argue with that.

Virtanen gets his wish and plays with his old linemates Bo Horvat and Sven Bäertschi against the Caps who all find the score sheet on Horvat's goal. This line looked threatening at many points throughout the night, but a loss is still a loss - 5-2 final. Virtanen needs to bring more consistency to his game and make the most of any opportunity he is given.

Frankly, he would be better served playing a tonne of minutes in Utica but because the Canucks lack depth they need him in Vancouver right now. Not ideal but to quote Todd Bertuzzi - "it is what it is".

Stecher looked good on the PP tonight.

It's going to be a long, slow year with this team under it's current makeup.

Au revoir, Dragon-Slayer.

Let's hope the spawn of Ulf Dahlen actually makes the roster someday.
