Probably everything I could have asked for out of 2016.

Flames pick up Elliott from St. Louis....

Good piece from Matchsticks and Gasoline on the numbers behind 12 goalies they compared and what it means to Jon Ortio......(the Flames also need a backup now).
http://www.matchsticksandgasoline.com/2 ... joni-ortio

Big Score on Matthew Tkachuk.....I was worried he wasn't going to be there. That's a fine player and exactly what the Flames needed.

http://www.matchsticksandgasoline.com/2 ... ew-tkachuk

Flames also picked up Adam Fox (D)

http://www.matchsticksandgasoline.com/2 ... e-prospect

Tyler Parson (G) with the London Knights and Center Dillon Dube from Kelowna.

Overall.. A good job by the Flames staff.

AND NO REIMER!!!

Yet.

Maybe a 1 a/b situation. Elliot is pretty cheap they could pay another potential starter as well if suitors are few for UFA goalies which is looking likely and Reimer is not going to be expensive.

Actually if Elliott is the first step toward a Reimer-type tandem that would be a pretty savvy move. We know Reimer can't do a full season, and Elliott isn't a viable starter.

I like the moves Calgary made. They make the no brainer pick at 6 while addressing their goaltending needs.

It will be interesting to see how Elliott fares without Hitch's defensive system in front of him - he more than showed his value last season and into the playoffs as an elite goaltender.

Also if Tkachuck will crack the lineup and make an impact straight away.

I'd think they would give Tkachuk another year in JR, but you never know. Though he has some size already with the annoying style of game he plays he could use even more filling out when he starts agitating the big boys.

Flames get Alex Chiasson for D-man Pat Sieloff.

http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=887577

Chiasson sure seemed like an up-and-comer with the Stars but has since seen his stock decline. No idea who Sieloff is.

Oh, Elliott is far from "elite." That said, I've had the discussion w/Fogg that IMO you don't need elite goaltending to win it all. Both teams in the Cup Final hardly had elite goaltending.

I'm curious to see how Elliott does. IMO he will be exposed. He was a disaster in Colorado...of course Colorado has a knack of making just about every goalie look bad that isn't playing Vezina-caliber. But he's still a human pinball machine who benefited from a defense that was extremely good at clearing rebounds and getting the puck out of the zone in STL. The Flames D is pretty good, and SHOULD be better once they get Dougie Hamilton working properly, but I think the Flames need to make another move if they're serious about being a playoff team.

I meant Elite as opposed to Super Elite.

Flames sign Johnson to a 1 year 1.7 Million contract

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/calg ... d-johnson/

Derek Will says:
#Flames will pay their two goaltenders (Elliott - $2.5M, Johnson - $1.7M) $300K less than they paid Hiller, $4.1M less than Hiller and Ramo.

Flames also sign Troy Brower....

http://www.matchsticksandgasoline.com/2 ... 22-million

I don't mind this signing. It doesn't break the bank and the guy has experience and leadership qualities on a young team that needs them.

In other news Joe Colborne takes the usual path for a played out Flame and goes to Colorado.

Mason Raymond is on waivers.

Can't argue that too much.

IMO a tandem of Elliott/Johnson is a mistake, but then again the Flames have a lot of capable two-way players and a top-3 on D that's borderline elite. If they can get guys like Hamilton and Backlund back on track and somehow get the latter and Giordano to stay healthy for a full season, they'll make waves in spite of mediocre goaltending.

The Brouwer acquisition seems fine, if nothing else that guy seems to hit a different gear in the postseason.

Strange...Josh Jooris signs with the Rangers after the Flames DNQ him. I thought they liked him.

Monahan may be boring, but he don't work for cheap. Neither does Johnny Hockey.

If Philly had any cap space they would've put in an offer sheet on local boy Johnny.

I can't understand why nobody else has given him an offer sheet. I know it's costly, but for fuck's sake, the kid is great! At the least, you make another team spend big money to match. At worst, you lose some draft picks but gain an all star winger, and some GMs won't like you. Who cares? You'll have a great, young player, probably locked up for like 7 years. Fuck conventional wisdom. The Flames have $14 million in cap space, and have to sign Monahan & Johnny. I don't know if they're a cap spending team, but if not, all the more reason to give the kid an offer sheet and force their hand.

Monahan gets his deal: seven years, ~44M

The longer it takes to sign Johnny the more nervous I get.

I don't blame you. As of now the Flames have $8.5 million in Cap space, with 12 forwards, 7 D-men and 2 goalies signed. I imagine JG will take more to sign than Monahan did, so they may be pushing the Cap with only 1 depth player for each D & F.

Well, it appears that even if they did have the cap space they still couldn't.

Good news for the Flames that an offer sheet can't force their hand, now they just have to worry about Johnny bolting for a Euro league.

$8 Million per year seems like a lot of dough.
