UFA after this season, and reportedly Yzerman will have to move some salary in order to re-sign him and stay under the cap.

I'm sure if he could, he'd move Voltron and Carle for peanuts, but given the state of the free agent market right now, no one has any room.

Kinda sucks for Tampa with production down, no trade clause stuff, and good chance they can only move him at rental value.

But who knows, guys of this age a stature just do not seem to see UFA so maybe someone in the hunt will pay a high price with the belief/hope they can get him longer.

Elliotte Friedman says an offer has come in from the team: eight years, $68M. $8.5 AAV

That ain't gonna do it.

Not good enough to get it done but good enough to say you made an offer before you traded him? Guess we will see soon enough.

Well, Stamkos is probably (no, DEFINITELY) looking for Toews/Kane/Kopitar-level coin, especially since he took the "hometown discount" with his last deal. I'm guessing if that was Tampa's offer, they don't think he's quite worth that much.

Do we move this to the Leafs or Rangers thread?

Everyone is making this about how much Tampa thinks he's worth. There is a salary cap and they have a bunch of other guys to sign. They may think he's worth more, but that they can't fit him into the salary structure if they pay him accordingly.

And Stamko does not seem to be the same as he was before he broke is leg...yet..he is still just 25 so it is a hard one. Some one is going to pay this guy and it's going to be a gamble.

Yzerman says Stamkos will not be dealt before the deadline. Better sign him, then.

They are a playoff team as it stands so he is worth as much to them as a rental as any other team if he was on the market.

Now he'll be the one watching: Out 1-3 months with a blood clot in his right arm.

Haven't Dupuis and one or two other NHLers had blood clots in the last few years? Seems like an odd thing for young, very healthy athletes to have. Are they results of injuries, maybe from blocking shots? Either way, that sucks.

Thanks. I mentioned it to a trainer friend of mine and he said clots have also been linked to various forms of PEDs. I thought PEDs would cause blood to thin and move faster, but he launched into a long winded explanation of why they cause clotting, which I didn't listen to. But at the least, trauma and air travel are major causes. I'd say the life of an NHLer is a high risk one then. Although, you'd think John Tortorella coached teams would be especially susceptible, and western conference teams with the increased travel.

Quote:
Surgeons will likely remove Steven Stamkos’ top rib on his right side today to alleviate pressure that caused a blood clot to form near his collarbone. “It isn’t a rib like you’d think of, it is much smaller, more like the size of an index finger,” explained Dr. Thomas Forbes, vascular surgeon at Toronto’s Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. Forbes said that rib, which is bonded by the collarbone, constricts blood flow to the vein and can cause clotting with trauma or repetitive motion, such as raising your arms above your head. It isn’t easy to pinpoint a timeline for Stamkos’ return; the Lightning said between one and three months. “Normal recovery for range of motion and exercise would be about one month from just the surgery alone,” Dr. Forbes said. “Doctors would then recommend some period of time on blood thinners, perhaps one month, which also complicates the timeline.” NHL players are not permitted to play games while on blood-thinning medication, as Chicago’s Kimmo Timonen revealed last year. A conservative doctor would peg a return to the ice in two months. Will Tampa Bay still be playing in early June?

The $70-million (or more) question potential suitors will want to know before betting on Stamkos this summer: How likely are these clots to re-occur? The answer is not likely. It isn’t possible to know Stamkos’ complete medical history, but surgeons removing his rib will likely prevent a clot from forming there again. The doctor performing Stamkos’ surgery at Tampa General Hospital explained that vein as located “right in a nutcracker jaw.” With the rib removed, space is no longer an issue. Dr. Forbes said blood clots form for three reasons: sluggish blood flow (sitting/laying for long periods of time), trauma, and people who inherit hypercoagulable dispositions hereditarily. Timonen, for instance, found a protein deficiency that traced back to his mother, which made him susceptible to clotting. Barring an unreported hereditary condition, this is likely to be a one-time injury for Stamkos, not career impeding.

One less rib to potentially injure in the future?

That won't affect his breathing?

And almost as stunning as the people who DID move today, is the fact that Stamkos doesn't.

http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/16620 ... -lightning

8 years, $8.5 million AAV. I think.

Thought for sure with all the fallout between him and Cooper that he was all but gone.

Yzerman definitely deserves credit for somehow salvaging both this and the Drouin debacles.
