Let's go all the way is personal fav on the list.

Safety Dance captures the spirit of 80's one hit wonder the best.

I gotta give it to the Montreal band, but if we're talking drunk karaoke or drunk passenger seat to McD drivethru, it's Jessie's Girl all the way.

Holllllllllld up now...Springfield wasn't just a one-hit wonder. He had TWO! :P

Schilling's Major Tom would be my vote here. Personal fave would probably be a tie between Matthew Wilder's "Break My Stride" and Johnny Hates Jazz's "Shattered Dreams."

Does Philip Bailey/Phil Collins count? I don't think they ever worked on anything else ever again. Obviously both had hits elsewhere though.

Tainted Love has stood the test of time for me. I'd probably add funkytown to the list.

and Grover Washington was oh so smooth

cheezy..........although the 80's had a lot of cheeze, you could probably create a second thread for the best cheeze of the decade

and I'd really like to include two hit wonder Murray Head........15 years between One Night in Bangkok and Jesus Christ Superstar. Ought to be some sort of statue of limitations.

and oh crap, forgot one of the greatest bands of all time..........Grateful Dead...and there only hit. Liked this song then and have grown into it now. Have to admit if I was stuck on a dessert island with one song mentioned so far, this would be it.

Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me" is pretty much unparalleled in terms of serious intent one-hit wonders that double as kitsch.

And Aimee Mann's vocal in "Voices Carry" by 'Til Tuesday just slays me.

I'll add the videos later. Another 80s dig that wasn't much more than a one-cult-hit-wonder was Romeo Void's "Never Say Never".

Some one hit wonders that I remember. They aren't the best but they were all were catchy little tunes that received decent radio play at the time.

Tommy Tutone's 867-5309 hit number 4 in 1982.

Marshall Crenshaw Someday, Someway hit number 36 in 1982

Robert Cray Band's Smoking Gun hit number 22 in 1987

Was surprised that you are right, that was Robert Cray's only hit. Strong Persuader was a sensational album by a great blues artist. Technically Cray, Grover Washington and the Dead probably don't belong here as they may have only had one hit, but their body of work (Cray 5 grammy's) makes them much more than a one off that the others are.

If you've never heard the Albert Collins, Robert Cray and Johnny Copeland collaboration album "Showdown" and like blues guitar it's a must to check out. Here's a taste

I agree professor Break My Stride was almost on my list.....as was Rockwell.

So here's a tribute to both:

Even with Solid Gold dancers!

And a shout out to Electric Avenue!

I still think Flash Gordon was the most bad ass 80's movie ever.....but that's a different topic.

I would consider Gimme Hope Jo'anna a hit as well for Eddy Grant.

Does M|A|R|R|S even count? Doesn't seem fair. This track is one of the most innovative ever released:

Like, my top 5 tracks of the 80s are "Straight Outta Compton", "When Doves Cry", "That's When I Reach for My Revolver", "Pump up the Volume" and "Fight the Power".

It's in rare air.

DUDE! I watched Purple Rain with my daughter the other night and I've been marching around singing When Doves Cry for a week now. Sweet tune.

One Night In Bangkok another worthy addition. Surprised nobody has mentioned that stupid Pass The Dutchie song.....

Yikes sorry I realize all the youtube links must be killing those with some slower speeds.

BTW, I'm a stickler for this category because "Cars" is pretty much up there as a track as well, but I know that came out in 1979. :P

Of the listed choices, debating between "Turning Japanese" and "The Safety Dance". After all, according to my English brother-in-law, "The Safety Dance" is our national anthem, and greatest achievement as a nation.

It's funny. I absolutely count "Cars" as an 80s tune, but don't count "Funkytown" even though the latter came out in 1980. One's synth pop, one's pretty much disco.

Can't believe we've gone this long without mentioning I Ran. That whole album is pretty decent, though.

Or Adam Ant, or Thomas Dolby, but I guess they arguably had other "hits."

I'm going with Men without Hats even though they were a two-hit wonder (to self-referentially quote the other one, "Everybody tell me have you heard 'Pop Goes the World'?"). And had another few half-hits thanks to Canadian content rules up here.
