Hoping someone like Bellows plays his role! Embattled rookie wins it!

Varlamov NOT good to go. No clue wtf happened but he was a surprise scratch. Sorokin was pretty damn good, winning 4-3 in OT. Some GREAT saves.

Palmieri with 2 goals, matching his output since they traded for him. Nelson & Pageau with the other goals.

Game 2 on Tuesday.

That Palmieri OT goal, wild. How did he get the bouncing puck and put it up top in such a small space?

Yeah, crazy seeing eye shot. It's about time his luck reversed after his 6.5 shooting % for this season.

Well if Jarry keeps that up this should be a pretty short series.

Every goal was stoppable. Maybe a couple of those can sneak through when playing well but not 4 of them. But that many in one game like that can get into ones head as a goalie, so we will see.

Pens have lost 7 of their last 8 playoff games or so. A lot of talk already that they're on the wrong side of their dynasty.

Dear Hockey Gods,
Make this so.
Thanks.

Varlamov gets the start in Game 2, and looks like a guy who hasn't played in over a week. Melted butter soft first goal, butter on the counter for a few hours soft second goal. Maybe he'll be refrigerated butter by the second period. Maybe.

Why go with him over Sorokin, who was great in Game 1?

Coaches can be so maddeningly stupid sometimes. They just can’t go against the grain.

Most times Varly looks bad it’s because he’s fighting through something and isn’t 100%. Honestly I think he’d be an elite-tier goalie if he didn’t get hurt all the damned time. The one season he was healthy in 2013-14 he was hands down the best goalie in hockey.

Anyway, dumb move Trotz, but it ain’t the only dumb move we’ve seen coaches make even in this very young postseason.

2-1 loss. Not the worst game, but giving up 45 shots certainly isn't playing Islanders "boring" hockey. 43 saves isn't bad obviously, but to lose 2-1 after giving up those 2 stinkers, well, stinks.

I always think I'll be satisfied with a road split, but it feels like they always win the first, giving me high hopes of a 2-0 return to home, only to have it be tied, which feels like a letdown. Oh well.

And I'll be on the ice for most of Thursday's game. :chris18:

I missed most of the game due to practice. Checked the score when I got off the ice and it was 1-0 Pens about halfway through. Walked to the lobby to see it tied 1-1. Yay! Pens scored while I waited for my daughter to make it down the hallway. Got home to see it was 3-1 Pens and sat to eat dinner as the third period started. Isles tied it like halfway through the third, Pens answered, Isles answered, Pens answered. Game over. The Isles looked really good offensively, but not that great defensively. They seem to be trying to play like the Pens instead of being themselves. Big credit where it's due- Crosby fucking ROBBED Nelson of what would have certainly been the tying goal late in the third. Nelson was open in front and got a pass ready to shoot and Crosby dove to get a stick on it. The net was wide open from Nelson's angle and the puck was headed in but Crosby deflected it into the stands. Fucker.

There was a lot of scuffles. At one point the refs had it with everyone, and threw literally every skater on the ice into the box. 5 guys in each box. I wasn't paying too much attention to it all, but Butch & Burke were ranting about how the penalty box guys must have gotten something wrong, because somehow Crosby was allowed out when the Isles scored. All 5 guys got coincidentals, but then Guentzel took an extra 2 minutes by slashing Palmieri on the way to the box with the ref between them (duh). But somehow Crosby was allowed out? B & B were saying the league can't do anything afterwards, but that they need to look into why Crosby of all people was let out. Shortly afterwards, Clultterbuck embellished being bumped and knocked Jarry over, taking a goalie interference penalty and the Pens scored on the PP- with Crosby setting it up. B&B were saying he should have still been in the box. Maybe when there are that many penalties they go in chronological order that the penalties were called? I've never seen all 5 from each team thrown in before. Can't take the goal away now if it was wrong, and I have no idea if it was or not.

Either way, this series is tighter than people thought it would be. Letting in 5 sounds terrible for Varlamov, and Butch Goring was all over him, saying two of the goals were soft and Shannon Hogan probably got yelled at because she said after the 2nd intermission that Varlamov was still in "for some reason". AJ looked at her like "WTF?" So maybe Sorokin will be in on Saturday. I'd like to see him. I think his athletic style matches better against the Pens.

Isles with a 4-1 win to even the series. Both teams with road splits, not the usual home team wins boringness. And the Isles with the first win that wasn't just by 1 goal. Patrick Sharp said he knows this one is going 7.

Sorokin was great. Made some really big saves, and then at times looked boring because he was in good position. Nelson with some great defensive stickwork on Crosby to create Bailey's goal. Kind of revenge for Crosby blocking his shot in Game 3. Nice to see Eberle get one. And Barzal with 2 assists. He's shooting more which is great.

Game 5 tonight in Pittsburgh. Here's to an Isles win!

Pittsburgh media is saying a high ranking Penguin official called the league to discuss the "disinterested officiating" in Game 4. If true, they're such a bunch of whiners. Mayfield got called for holding Crosby. He put his hand on Crosby's chest and pushed him down, and Crosby pulled him down with his hand on Mayfield's head. Mayfield called for holding. Fortunately, shortly afterwards Zucker tripped Pelech and got called, then Letang tripped/interfered with Pelech and also got called. Isles scored on both PPs, which is amazing for them. So the Pens are butt hurt over the penalties. But disinterested? Please. They were both good calls; far better than the call on Mayfield.

Trotz asked which goalie will start- "The Russian. Who catches with his left hand." It should be Sorokin though. He's 2-0, Varlamov is 0-2.

Sorokin stops 48 of 50 shots. Isles win it 3-2 in 2OT. Wahlstrom hurt on a hit by Matheson, who had his stick up high and it caught Wahlstrom's head, which snapped to the side as he hit the boards like it was a fast bag. Fucking ugly to watch. I hope the kid is okay. He was starting to play really well.

Bailey wins it in 2OT on a moronic clearing attempt by Jarry that went pretty much right to Bailey. 3-2 lead. Time to close it out at home and give the Coliseum at least another round of games.
