Didn't want this thread to die, and am reproducing Sask's list here:

saskhab wrote:
So I'm going to use this thread to update the ex-defunct team player list.

Basically combining what I wrote here on the Nordiques and the work done above, plus adding ex-Jets and ex-North Stars to the list.

Hartford Whalers, 2008-09:

D Chris Pronger - Anaheim
G Jean-Sebastien Gigurere - Anaheim
C Bobby Holik - New Jersey
C Michael Nylander - Washington
LW Jeff O'Niell - tryout, Carolina
D Nolan Pratt - UFA
D Marek Malik - UFA
LW Brendan Shanahan - UFA
LW Geoff Sanderson - UFA

Minnesota North Stars, 2008-09:

D Derian Hatcher - Philadelphia
C Mike Modano - Dallas
D Richard Matvichuk - tryout, Columbus

Quebec Nordiques, 2008-09:

D Adam Foote - Colorado
RW Owen Nolan - Minnesota
C Joe Sakic - Colorado
C Peter Forsberg - UFA
LW Martin Gelinas - UFA
D Aaron Miller - UFA
C Mats Sundin - UFA
G Jocelyn Thibault - UFA

Winnipeg Jets, 2008-09:

RW Shane Doan - Phoenix
C Kris Draper - Detroit
LW Chad Kilger - Florida* (suspended for not reporting)
G Nikolai Khabibulin - Chicago
D Teppo Numminen - Buffalo
LW Keith Tkachuk - St. Louis
RW Teemu Selanne - UFA

There are a few ex-defunct team players playing overseas, but this is the North American watch list. It is doubtful any of the players still active overseas will ever come back to play in the NHL.

Still a lot of these guys looking for work/debating their future after Labour Day.

Minnesota North Stars (THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE):
C Mike Modano - Dallas

Quebec Nordiques:
D Adam Foote - Colorado
RW Owen Nolan - Minnesota
C Joe Sakic - Colorado

Winnipeg Jets:
RW Shane Doan - Phoenix
C Kris Draper - Detroit
G Nikolai Khabibulin - Chicago
D Teppo Numminen - Buffalo
LW Keith Tkachuk - St. Louis
RW Teemu Selanne - Anaheim

Only 14 still out there that played on defunct teams. Of course, the 3 big guys who are sitting as UFA's will likely play a half-season or so (Shanahan, Sundin, Forsberg). Sanderson, Thibault, and Miller are all UFA's... don't know if any have officially hung 'em up yet. Gelinas signed in Switzerland, Pratt is in Russia, Matvichuk and O'Niell I think are done for good, Kilger is getting drunk and fat at home, and Hatcher is facing a career ending injury but still under contract by Philly.

No, I don't. I used the FanPost feature and James apparently liked it enough to move it to the main feed. Usually those get left on the right side of the page.

Wow...haven't been in this forum for a loooooong time.

Sadly, with the retirements of Foote and Modano, that's it for the Nords and North Stars, and since then the Jets are no longer an endangered species.

Winnipeg Jets (ORIGINAL):
RW Shane Doan - Phoenix
C Kris Draper - Detroit
G Nikolai Khabibulin - Edmonton
LW Keith Tkachuk - St. Louis
RW Teemu Selanne - Anaheim

Hartford Whalers:
D Chris Pronger - Philadelphia
G Jean-Sebastien Gigurere - Anaheim
C Michael Nylander - Washington
L Brendan Shanahan - NHL Office of Suspensions and "Shanabans" (I didn't make that word up)

Time to start tracking the ex-Thrashers.

We didn't get to make it to a point where there were we ran out of players that played for an extinct team, despite 15 years in between relocations.

Yeah, looks like Nolan's failed tryout with the Canucks killed the Nordiques.

Expect a childish editorial from Damien Cox blaming them for this in the coming days.

Someone on HF mentioned that Mike Craig retired from pro hockey, though he's been gone from the NHL for some time.

http://www.ohlalumnicentral.com/mike-cr ... urricanes/

I believe Modano was the last North Star to retire from the NHL, correct?

Where does this leave the Whalers? And the original Jets?

I suppose someone will keep track of the remaining Thrashers in the NHL, but that just feels so...lame.

Whalers- looks like Giguere is the only one really left, although Pronger hasn't officially retired. He gets dizzy taking his kids to public skating, but he is still planning a come back...

Jets are down to Selanne & Doan, right? Well, and the whole new team.

I think we need to hold off on the ex-Thrashers list for at least 3 more years- kind of like the 5 year Hall of Fame wait.

Well, the, uh, greatest Thrasher of All Time has already retired, so I suppose the countdown has begun.

Kane may surpass him though but seems less and less likely

I know you've seen much more of him than I have, but I don't think Evander is nearly as talented as Ilya, but has a similar work ethic.

Yeah, point taken, but like I said- 5 years from date of moving starts the discussion. And he "retired" from the NHL, not hockey. It's not like he retired due to age.

And even if he ends up becoming better than Kovalchuk somehow, it won't have been in Atlanta.

Pronger -- keeping the dream alive until 2038 or whenever!
