May as well start this, so I can ignore it for a couple more months.

Some interesting times in Dove Valley, where the Denver Broncos are headquartered.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/pat- ... ing-owner/

So summarize: Longtime Broncos owner Pat Bowlen (whose family made their fortune in the Canadian oil business, there was once speculation he was threatening to move the team to Toronto) relinquished control of the team shortly after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Since then there has been a Bowlen Trust largely run by Bowlen's friend and associate Joe Ellis. Recently the Broncos had to buy out the minority ownership of Bowlen's son because of his rampant legal troubles, but otherwise the team has run under Ellis and General Manager John Elway relatively smoothly.

Now Bowlen's daughter Beth has publicly stated she wishes to take over the team. Apparently she met the criteria laid out by Ellis and the trust--going to school and getting her law degree being one--but is still being denied. I realize there may be more going on behind the scenes but this really just looks like a very conservative organization in a very conservative league not ready to have another female owner in the league. The last female sports owners I can recall were Marge Schott of the Cincinnati Reds and Georgia Frontiere of the (then) St. Louis Rams. Again, I don't know what exactly "qualifies" you to own a sports franchise. If Daniel Snyder is any indication, it takes money and...that's it. I say let her run it, but that's just me.

Ellis has been a mixed bag BTW. He was responsible for bringing in Elway as GM, but he was also responsible for the mess that preceded it when he hired Josh McDaniels as head coach (and gave him managerial control, which reportedly he didn't even want but Ellis insisted).

If the NHL is any indication, you don't even need money...

Well, this is too easy. The Detroit Lions pre-season prognostication: Still grim.

I can't believe people are STILL HIRING Belichick disciples even though it's been readily proven many times that away from their Master and Commander, they're worthless.

Well, didn't take long for the Nathan Peterman Era to end in Buffalo.

Broncos holding a tenuous lead against the Seaclucks. Von Miller with a monster day thus far, three sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery. Unfortunately, Case Keenum has thrown three(!!!) picks.

I'm gonna have to tune into NFL Network tonight and find out what happened to the Browns, apparently it's just them finding new ways to make their fans miserable, which is kinda fun to watch.

On the eve of Super Bowl 53, two longtime representatives of the Broncos make their way into the Hall of Fame.

Pat Bowlen, longtime owner of the franchise, finally gets enshrined. Sadly, he's in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's Disease so it's unlikely he even knows what's going on. His wife was also recently diagnosed.

Champ Bailey also gets the nod. Unfortunately fan-favorite safety Steve Atwater didn't make it.

Other notable inductees include TE Tony Gonzales and DB Ty Law.

Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid win a victory of sorts over the NFL.

https://slate.com/culture/2019/02/colin ... usion.html

On one hand, good for them. They at least scared and embarrassed the NFL enough to hand over what I'm guessing is a very substantial amount of money, even though divided amongst 32 franchises is more than affordable for each of them. On the other, I don't blame those guys one bit for taking the money and signing the NDA. If they had fought this, the NFL might have eventually lost, though there was no guarantee, especially in front of a jury. And the NFL could have brought their considerable financial resources to bear even if they won to tie this thing up for a very, very long time.

I still can't believe the owners think it's worth paying Roger Goodell insane gobs of money when he's proven to be one of the most incompetent commissioners in NFL history.

The fucking NFL is the worst-run professional sports league in the world and it's not even close.

The league freaks the fuck out when Aaron Rodgers gets sacked and breaks his collarbone to the point where they call roughing the passer on completely innocuous tackles. Yet they do virtually nothing to take out late, dirty hits that have done far more damage to far more players, which is what happened to Eagles Quarterback Carson Wentz when he was concussed on a dirty hit as he was already headed to the ground.

Pat Mahomes and the Kansas City Chefs won the Super Bowl. First for coach Andy Reid and first for KC in 50 years.

Good for them. Happy for Paul Rudd.

Someone pointed out that the reigning champs in all four major North American sports are either new or haven't won it in a looooooooong time.

NHL - Blues (1st championship)
NBA - Raptors (1st championship)
NFL - Chiefs (1st championship in 50 years)
MLB - Nationals (1st championship)
