We're a few weeks into the season, but what the hey.

The Als looked like they were in trouble after starting QB Crompton and then backup LeFevour went down in the opener, but Rakeem Cato has come out of nowhere to take the number one job.

Cato's an interesting case of a guy who might be talented enough for the NFL but because he's only 6'0 tall didn't get a look. He broke every passing record at Marshall and came from the projects in Miami. He's lived a tough life but has persevered. He's the kind of guy who's easy to root for, and might be what the Als need to get back to the Grey Cup.

Fuck this season so far.

The new rules are fun, even if teams seem to have lost any sense of what legal procedure is for some unrelated reason leading to a shit-ton of extra flags.

Als broke a 15 year losing streak in BC, only to fire coach Tom Higgins the next day.

Higgins is a mediocre coach, to be sure, but Popp swooping in Lou Lams style isn't going to make things better.

This season has been atrocious. More flags than ever, and generally just a lot of lousy football, especially from the Als.

Leos and Jennings have been a surprise thus far.

From the Als? At least you're doing yourself a favour and not watching the CFL's flagship team. Just a trainwreck happening in Regina under Jones. Team has been fined multiple times for violations, traded most of the fan favourites, just signed noted anti-Semite Khalif Mitchell to the practice roster, had recruited a guy convicted of rape, and still only a one win team.

True, I haven't watched anything non-Als. I'm not that much of a glutton for punishment.

Missed opportunity for the Als to rebuild the franchise.

The only GM the new Als have ever known, Jim Popp, is out after 20 years at the helm. They replaced him today with ex-Esks coach Kavis Reed, who has no GM or front office experience. Had a chance to bring in Danny Maciocia, who just built the Universite de Montreal Carabins into a college powerhouse, but they lowballed him.

I don't hate the Reed hiring in a vacuum, but passing on the local boy with more experience for a closed hiring process was a mistake.

Overly insular organizations usually bottom out pretty quickly once the reigning king leaves. Avs have been in a relative tailspin ever since Lacroix left and are only now trying to break that culture.
