And to make it fun, Don Sweeney said in an interview that it was Chara's choice to leave, which of course directly refutes what Chara has maintained was Boston's desire to go younger (i.e., cheaper).

The way I read it, Chara said Boston offered him a contract but didn't guarantee he'd play a lot. So I think they offered him a contract but hinted he'd be the 7th D.

If the B's were dumb enough to play the likes of Steven Kampfer ahead of Zdeno Chara, then that's as good as not tendering an offer.

I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if it went something like that--an offer that wasn't really an offer. The late Pierre Lacroix pulled that shit all the time with players. He'd lowball them and then say to the press "Hey...I tried." The player in question would later say how insultingly low the offer was.
