What an awful deal. He'll be 38 by the time this thing runs out.

I don't understand what many of these GM's are thinking these days - Oshie is already 30 and will be 31 this year. The last three years of this contract are going to be a gong show for both he and the team. It's like there are elite player contracts and cheap emerging player contracts with nothing in between and the complete dismantling of the middle class NHL player.

So it's a metaphor for the rest of North America?

And I think most GMs are thinking "I'm not going to be here in 8 years, so fuck the next guy! I want to win now so I look good enough to hire somewhere else."

Definitely changes the Radulov negotiations. Sounds like the player wants 7 years and the Habs want 4. Osh deal gives Alex some leverage.

Man, I don't ever think I've heard a guy sound as defeated as McLellan did the other day.

They should've let Oshie walk. They've already suffered way too much both before (losing Schmidt for nothing) and after (signing Kuznetsov for KHL threat-boosted money, forcing a trade of Johansson for near-nothing, and while it's not a huge loss they still lost Alzner) just to fit this deal under the cap. If indeed this was their BIG push and it failed, I don't see why you lock him down long-term and more or less wave the white flag everywhere else.

Did McLellan mis-gauge the market? Only Radulov and Alzner got five years among the UFAs.

Losing Johansson was bad. Time for Vrana to sink or swim.
