Good read. I can certainly tell you the Avs' overall shot quality has dipped disastrously since their hot start.

Ovi's the rare player who improved by standing around and not skating.

His bull in a china shop routine, trying to beat defenders one on one, became really predictable. The Habs D cracked the code in that 2010 playoff series.

Now, he's not the one moving the puck. Instead, he get open and waits for the pass.

Basically Oates turned him in Brett Hull.

Especially when you have a D like Mike Green and especially a C like Nick Backstrom to move the puck instead.

Notably in last night's game, while Ovechkin and Backstrom were racking up the points, Green was racking up PIMs.

Yeah, Green sucked big time and Holtby got pulled. Not a banner night for ex-Blades (or current ones, either).

As I pointed out on Twitter, Ovechkin broke Peter Bondra's franchise mark for power play goals last night. The first of many such all-time franchise records in the near future. Shots are next, then points, then assists (which Backstrom will likely take from Ovi), then goals and game winners.

Much like Oates once turned Brett Hull into Brett Hull.

Ovechkin scored #400, reaching the milestone in a pace befitting a true legend. Here's a good write-up on the accomplishment:

http://www.japersrink.com/2013/12/20/52 ... x-ovechkin

Watch the video of his first goal for just a reminder of what he's done for the Capitals. The Caps need to make some changes to get back to being true contenders in Ovi's time, but it's hard to believe there have been many better first overall picks in the history of the game than Ovechkin based on what he's done for the team. He scored it wearing boring black uniforms, in front of a half-empty rink, wearing the clothes they probably were going to fall asleep on the couch wearing when they got back home. Now Washington is sold out every night, rocking the red, truly one of the best crowd atmospheres in the sport.

And about 99% of that is because of what Ovechkin would do in his first 3-4 years in the NHL, and what he continues to do today.

His very first goal scored is classic Hull.

So Alex Ovechkin just finished the month of March without a single even-strength point.

7 points in 15 games, all on the PP.

That is also with a Corsi number of 0.446. That is some hard shooting % regression.

I'd like to point out Oates has pretty much stuck with a "top line" of Johansson-Beagle-Ovechkin and put Kuznetsov on LW with Backstrom. And in the Caps last game, a SO loss, new acquisition Dustin Penner played a whopping 9:33.

Oates should be fired this offseason. I thought some of his innovations (switching OV to RW to better secure the puck and create rebounds, having him play without the puck more) meant he thought outside the box more than your typical coach, but it appears he only looks at effort level and little else, hence using Jay Beagle as a scoring center, Dustin Penner as a 4th line grinder, and Kuznetsov at left wing on a team that's been looking for depth at the center position since the Bush Administration.

McPhee should probably get the axe as well, but this Caps team is failing right now because of their coach rather than in spite of him.

The best coaches know how to adjust. Oates had one good idea that didn't last.

Butch Goring was making fun of Ovi during yesterday's Caps-Isles game. Said something along the lines of "49 goals and he's a -35??? Folks, you've pretty much gotta try to do that. Or more truthfully, not try at all behind the red line" They showed a few of his better coasting-back-while-his-team-gets-scored-on moments from this year. Awesome stuff.

Has Putin forgiven Ovi yet for not winning gold? Could Alex pull a Kovalchuk and high-tail it back to Russia this offseason?

I doubt Ted lets Alex walk, unless he wants to blow it up again.

I get the feeling that if Putin hasn't forgiven him, he'd be better off staying far from Russia in the off-season.

Actually no, like anything this extreme, it's a team effort.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2020 ... -35-rating

Basically GMGM isn't doing enough to augment the talent on the roster, and Oates is taking whatever talent that isn't wearing a number 8 and marginalizing it. It's not just Ovechkin who can't score at even strength right now, it's the whole fucking team.

Couple that with a bad defense and bad goaltending and you have an epically bad plus/minus.

Honestly, I think Oates is doing a worse job than Carlyle right now. At least Randy knew how to use Dustin Penner.

Yes. Ovi is bad at defense. He's lazy at times. Case in point: This gem from last season (I think it was last season):

Image

But I'll take a "lazy, inattentive defensively" player who is a consistent scoring threat any day of the year. His plusses still far outweigh his minuses.

If you can't build a winner around that guy, you can't build a winner period.

That won't stop Putin now.
