With Wilson in and Barrie out, the pairings look like this

Hejda - Johnson
Wilson - Guenin
Benoit - Sarich

Understandable to a point that Barrie would sit--he's not been good so far, but still better than frickin' Sarich. Suddenly, that's a very slow-looking blueline once again.

Wow. Nice win, even though once again some shoddy defensive play was made up for by a stellar goaltending effort. And Neuvirth wasn't exactly great tonight at the other end.

MACKINNON FIRST NHL GOAL. And Duchene with a highlight-reel roofer that ended up being the game winner.

Roy is definitely sheltering MacKinnon, even keeping him off the ice in the closing minutes of the first. Mitchell centered his line for the final couple shifts. He's also giving the kid more power play time and less PK duty, and vice versa with O'Reilly...which is how it should be.

Tanguay looks reinvigorated out there. And I don't know when he learned to shoot the puck more, but I'm glad he is.

John Mitchell is about the craziest 4th liner I've ever seen. He DESPERATELY wants to get a highlight reel goal. The HF fans took to calling him "Johnny Malkin" last season because he always tries to beat guys 1-on-1 with a bunch of nifty moves. He tried that about every shift in this game.

Wilson/Guenin was a terrible defensive pairing. Wilson is understandably slower than usual (if that's possible) after coming back from a knee injury, but putting him with another really slow guy was a huge mistake. Sarich/Benoit was a little better than usual though.

Avs did a good job shutting down Ovechkin, though there were times he was coasting, including Tanguay's shorthanded goal.

Can't complain about too much though--we knew this team would have some major defensive zone issues. This is as phenomenal a start as we have any right to expect.

He was called that back in his Leaf days.
