Way to go Redskins, Wizards, and Nationals. You've made DC a hockey town!

They gave the B's a good beatdown on opening night in Bahstun. 4-1 win, 2 goals each for Laich and Ovie, 3 points each for Laich, Ovie, and Backstrom.

Laich is now on Washington's first PP unit. Whoever drafted him has got a fucking gold mine.

Boudreau called for "Semen or Simeon" Varlamov but neglected to ask for "Semyon". So they went with Theo.

Big shocker--Ovechkin named the NHL's first star in week 1. Anderson and Tkachunk the other two.

Most impressive though (to me at least) has been Brooks Laich. Right now he's tied with Ovie in goals and only one assist behind. It should still be a concern that this team still doesn't have that #1 shutdown guy on defense, but hey, 2 games in they look pretty solid.

Semin's first goal last night was ridiculous.

Give the Rags credit. Lundqvist and the super-young Rangers D held Ovechkin to zero points last night.

I'll say this season what I said last season: My team may suck but damn, it's a good time to be a hockey fan. The talent in the league right now is so much better than it was during the Dead Puck Era it's not even funny.

Bit of a shakeup in the lines, and it apparently worked.

Ovechkin - Morrison - Knuble
Laich - Backstrom - Semin

Apparently this team is getting bitchslapped by the cap worse than any other team right now, at least as far as it's keeping their best prospect from entering the roster on account of paying Michael Nylander $5 million not to play.

The Euro line is reunited and they kill the Flyboys 4-2. Backstrom with a four point night!

I'm liking this Caps/Flyers rivalry that appears to be brewing. At the very least you can tell Ovechkin and Richards don't like one another.

Wow...now that's an ass-whoopin'.

Four points for Green, FIVE for Backstrom. Someone's gunning for a hefty raise.

Man, Alexander Semin is playing at a ridiculous level right now. He'll be the most sought-after free agent this offseason, restricted or not. I think the main deterrent for him going to the KHL next season is that he'd be bored out of his mind on the ice.

I also feel bad for Theo. He clearly is not in the game right now. Turned in another ridiculously bad performance tonight.

Ovechkin with his performance of the year tonight. With his team down 2-0 in Edmonton he takes over and scores 2 to tie it up. 3 points on the night, his 4th(?) multi-goal game of the season, Michal Neuvirth's first career win.

Tomas Fleischmann turning into a scoring threat all his own now. The Wings could sure use him right about now.

I freakin' love Boudreau as a coach. Dude is willing to try anything.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/j ... le1440138/

Quote:
The situation in the big Pittsburgh-Washington shootout the other night: Caps are leading by a goal early in the third and are awarded a power play. With Mike Green missing because of an undisclosed injury, coach Bruce Boudreau sends out five forwards – Mike Knuble, Tomas Fleischman and Nicklas Backstrom up front; Alex Ovechkin and Brendan Morrison on the point. The Caps scored almost immediately – and this with Alex Semin and Brooks Laich, who usually sets up in front of the goal with the man advantage, on the bench. Jose Theodore v. Brent Johnson probably wasn't the goaltending match-up that you'll see if these teams meet in the playoffs, but it sure made for a fun game.

Green gets 3 games for an elbow to the head of Frolik. If this had happened three weeks ago, he wouldn't have been suspended.

It really wasn't terribly vicious. At full speed it didn't look too bad. He's got a charleyhorse, so I guess he'll heal up.

Just when you thought the Pens were going to be the team to end the streak...

http://www.nhl.com/ice/recap.htm?id=200 ... d=sb:recap

...Ovechkin gets his first hat trick of the season.

Crosby's got like 3 hat tricks on the year this season, and Ovechkin hasn't gotten a single one until now? Weird...

USA's World Junior Hero John Carlson scored his first NHL goal last night. Guy has a goal and four assists in 18 games so far... and is a PLUS 12. The Capitals have NINE players that are greater than +20, led by Ovechkin at +44.

Let's look at the ridiculous statistical season of the Capitals. Nine guys over +20, potentially two 100 point players, one potential 50 goal guy and another potential 40 goal guy (Ovechkin at 45, Semin at 35), 7 20 goal scorers (and possibly 8 with Green at 17), a defenseman with an over PPG average, only two players who have minus ratings (Sloan at -1 in 36 games, Corvo at -2 in 10 games) and 3 different players with over 10 power play goals.

All 3 of their goalies have identical SV%'s: .910.
