Longtime Vancouver sports journalist, most recently with the Athletic. Only 48, died of heart failure.

Terrible news. Loved his Provies/Athletties columns. And only a little over six years older than I am right now. Way, way, way too young to be dying of heart failure.

WTF?? I was just listening to his latest podcast, the Patcast… This is awful news for Vancouver hockey fans... I was worried his love of Beaver Buzz-fueled raging on the Patcast was going to get him into trouble. Will miss him on the Athletties. Best post-game coverage for Canucks fans in years...

Simply the best in Vancouver at what he did. He'll leave a big hole in locale Canuck's journalism.

Botch was a unique talent and trail blazer as a hockey writer for Vancouver. His ability to connect narratives between big picture macro organizational structure with micro moves or plays within a game was his media innovation. He was smart, funny, intuitive and pushed the envelope while remaining respected as a beat reporter. Most of all he connected with fans whom he made feel they were a contributing to everything he did. He's the reason why i signed up for the Athletic when the Provies was dropped. He will be sorely missed. Rip.

Had no idea his stepfather John Lott (National Post, Athletic) was Botchford's stepfather. Penned a tribute today https://theathletic.com/1245451/2019/10 ... s-tribute/

Yes - for all intents and purposes, he was Dad to Botch. Great tribute.

Family announced that Jason died of an accidental overdose of cocaine and fentanyl.

Wow. Sad, but not terribly surprising...

Botch was among the best at sports reporting. He will be missed.

Fentanyl takes another - the deaths from this drug seem endless.

Personally I was pretty surprised. Recreational drug use quite common, especially for a guy who was a self proclaimed Phish-head. This fantanyl thing is super dangerous and some would argue negligent murder. Yet another totally pointless death.

this is why I decriminalizing all drugs for recreational purposes is a good idea. If you wanted cocaine he would have had cocaine but instead the cocaine he wanted was cut by some f****** hillbilly piece of s*** with fentanyl.

I would like to start exploring psilocybin and LSD in terms of how they can be a therapeutic drug and unfortunately unless I'm associated with the university I don't have access unless I go to street drugs and if I were to do that I could be risking what happened to Jason here.

Exploring the notion of micro dosing for treating depression, anxiety, PTSD and mental health issues in general fascinates me. LSD when taken correctly and in the right environment and safe setting can change ones outlook on life for the better quite dramatically.

I took in while in class in grade 12. Can't say it changed my long term outlook on life but short term it was a blast. ;)

you might find this interesting. https://crackdownpod.com/

The drug war, covered by drug users as war correspondents.

Their viewpoint, and they have the most relevant experience possible really challenged my assumptions and opened my mind to better options. I'd never heard of "chipping" people with heroin addiction who hold down jobs and families but take small does of heroin 3 or 4 times a day, not to get high but to just feed the addiction at the most minimal level possible (hello Kieth Richards). It's maintenance medication nothing more. With fentanyl in the drug supply its become impossible for them to know what they are putting in and what dosage to use.

Legalize it and let the government sell it. It won't encourage kids to try it, they can get it if they want to and most don't want to. And it will take the profit out of it for criminals reducing gang crime and petty theft for addicts trying to feed their addiction.

Providing a safe supply chain would save lives.
