I'm not old, you're old. You're so old, you have to ask ME what to do next.

Feel the burn.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/nhl ... -schedule/

Schedule has them doing only one six-game road trip vs. 3 last season; will be at home to face a tired road team 11 times, as opposed to getting home to play a rested road team (which they did 11x last year); only once will they get home to face a rested team (which they did 11x last year), according to @BatchHockey...

The JTM deal has the potential to be a good one. Just depends on what they do the next two seasons. They could afford to "tank it" one more year, but after that, it's a potential Duchene deal situation.

Lineup as currently constructed...

Miller - Pettersson - Boeser
Pearson - Horvat - Baertschi
Eriksson - Gaudette - Virtanen
Roussel - Beagle - Leivo
I don't know where to put Sutter in there, assuming he'll be 100% by the start of camp.

Edler - Tanev
Q. Hughes - Stetcher
Hutton - Biega

Markstom
Demko

That's not bad really, though IMO you're still putting too heavy a burden on the youngsters.

well you can scratch Hutton from your lineup Av

Quote:
The Canucks did not issue qualifying offers to Brendan Gaunce, Markus Granlund, Ben Hutton,Yan-Pavel Laplante and Derrick Pouliot.

Rumour has it they think they can sign him for cheaper. I think he's been pretty badly treated by the organization, worth his while to take his UFA status and shop elsewhere.

Habs could use Hutton and could deal with an inflated arbitration decision.

As much as the cost for JTM sounds like an overpayment, with any luck, it won't be until the '21 draft that they lose the first pick. Unless he is a Top 3 pick, it's unlikely he would play that season so perhaps he doesn't play until 2022 at the earliest. GMJB will likely be long gone, and in the meantime they'll have had JTM for two or three years to round out their top 6. I can see how GMJB was able to convince himself that this was a risk worth taking.

But I still think giving up a first sucks...

That's just not good enough; it puts too much emphasis on who the #7 and 8D are. I remain optimistic that Juolevi can remain healthy and outplay Sautner and Brisebois for that #7 spot, likewise, Biega just isn't good enough to be in the Top 6 on opening night. Not sure if they'll be successful at re-signing Hutton given that he's been in the doghouse for the last two years.

Hearing that GMJB has been courting Tyler Myers (Rene Lavoie is predicting 7 years at $8M :fffffuck: ) but I wonder if that has been strategically leaked so that when he gets signed for something less ($7m at 5 years or something), so the media will present this as phew! That was a great pick up - it could have been so much worse! When really, it probably still is an overpayment for Myers.

Also hoping that Woo can take the next step and get first pairing minutes in Utica this season and perhaps be the first call-up when Tanev goes down. Speaking of which, he's also being shopped around but not sure if there is a market for him.

Edler - Stetcher
Hughes - Myers (perhaps)
Hutton (perhaps) - Tanev

Spare parts...
Juolevi - Woo
Sautner - Biega

And it happened. It finally happened.

https://twitter.com/TSNBobMcKenzie/stat ... 0179459072

One of these cap-dodging megadeals FINALLY bites a team in the ass. First ever cap recapture penalty enforcement.

Quote:
On to the business: VAN will get hit with a cap recapture penalty of slightly more than $3M in each of the next three seasons. FLA cap recapture penalty will be slightly more than $1M in each of next three seasons.

That sucks, but it could've been much worse had he done it sooner.

The gift that keeps on giving from Bettman… :argh:

The Canucks new this would be coming, and GMJB should have accounted for this in his wheeling and dealing. Heard that they had a chance to pick up Nyquist but ran out of cap room likely as a result of this cap recapture penalty.

So they pick up Miller, Myers, Benn and Fantenburg, lost Schenn, Hutton, Granlund (thank goodness) so far:

Baerschi / Petterson / Boeser (RFA)
Pearson / Horvat / Miller
Eriksson / Sutter / Virtanen
Leivo (RFA) / Beagle / Motte
Roussel (LTIR, probably)
(Motte (RFA), Schaller, Gaudette, Goldobin (RFA), plus a supporting cast in the minors)

Edler / Benn
Hughes / Tanev
Benn / Stetcher
(Fantenburg, Juolevi, Brisebois, Sautner, Teves (LHD), Biega, Rafferty, Woo (RHD), and a cast of dozens...)

Markstrom, Demko
(DiPietro, Kielly,...)

Looks like you've got Benn in there twice but point taken, who knows what those D pairings are going to be. They need to play Tanev less. Heard they may pair Myers with Hughes - the big man, small man thing. Who knows how that will work.

Seeing Eriksson's name up there makes me shutter. They need to move him and eat some salary. Not crazy about retaining Schaller and hope they move on from Goldy, he has no finish.

Benning has to make the playoffs or he's gone. Should the Canucks be out of by Jan 1, he'll be a sitting duck and personally I'd be fine with them missing if it meant we could rid ourselves of the current regime. Although Benning has done some good things on the amateur scouting side of the business, there's far more to running a successful hockey operation than that.

Are Teves and Rafferty any good? How much AHL time do they need? I can never tell with those sought after NCAA UFAs...

So is the plan to just keep Tanev around until he just completely falls apart?

Apparently so. The ship sailed on Tanev's trade value long ago so that's on Benning's feeble negotiating abilities. Would be happy to see him play 40 meaningful games this season.

Apparently Chris Tanev & Brandon Sutter are still being shopped because they want to clear cap space and sign another top 6 forward. The Canucks are also getting concerned that there is no landing spot for Ericksson unless the Canucks are willing to ship out a prime asset with him. Schaller’s camp pursuing a change of scenery. Trade would return almost nothing. Just send $1.9M out. Bit of a mess you've made there Jimbo.

shoulda been Edler / Myers... :fffffuck:

Was thinking that ideally, they would pair a puck-mover with a more stay-at-home type. Hughes / Myers might be fun to watch but who plays defence? I'd be ok with moving Tanev, Eriksson, Schaller and Goldy but who would take them? Toronto might ask about Tanev but they probably have other, cheaper, less fragile options for a RHD... Now that I think about it, he might be the type that Babcock likes so perhaps.

Glad to see this team has moved on from the Sea of Granlund (signed with EDM) but as Jyrki21 pointed out, until they prove otherwise, we are now swimming in the Lake of Motte.

Heard an interesting possibility... Sutter for his overhyped (by GMJB) qualities, is actually a very good PKer. Would Chicago be a good fit? Apparently, they are looking for PK specialists. He has a modified NTC but I wonder if they might be able to trade Sutter ($4.375m) and some spare change for Chicago's 1st to replace the one that GMJB traded for JTM.

Hughes, $916k ELC >> Hutton, $2.8M/yr
Benn, $2M/yr > Pouliott $1.1M/yr, MDZ $2.25M/yr, Biega $825k
Myers, $6M/yr ? Gudbranson, $4M/yr

Hughes will be a definite upgrade on Hutton on the second pairing, may be even the top by the end of the season. Benn should be an upgrade on Pouliott and MDZ playing on their wrong side, and perhaps even Biega. They may also play Hughes on his wrong side in a pinch, but that may be asking a bit much from a rookie. Myers should be an upgrade over Gudbranson, however, pretty much everything GMJB said about TM could have been verbatim about Guddy when he was brought in so we shall see. I'm (again) looking forward to how Juolevi and Woo will progress in the AHL (assuming Woo comes over), and how the others like Rafferty and the like might bolster their defensive depth.

Does anyone know if Hoglander is coming over or is he going to return to Europe for another season? It's a pity that Podgolzin will be under contract for two more years but from what I've heard, playing in the KHL will be far better for his development than the AHL.
