The Canucks new philosophy on building a team will become more apparent this summer. The departure of Tryamkin and subsequent signing of Gudbranson was a minor move - however the draft will be the tell sign to affect this change.

If they draft a centre, it would start to look like they are building a team with balance - after last year they picked Joulevi who many have slated to be a top D pairing in the NHL within the next few years.

Or draft a D and go the more traditional route of building a team from the goal line out.

Does a Tanev trade help fill the centre void? Does a Tanev trade produce an additional 1st round pick where they could then draft another D or centre? It’s really a blank page at this stage with $22 million in cap space and many paths to the promise land.

Here is a quick breakdown of the Canucks future as it stands now. Many holes to fill and it starts here....

Markstrom/ Demko - unless of course they give Miller another 3 year 18 million dollar deal….
Bo Horvat - coming off a 20 goal season, works hard, plays hard
Brock Boeser - A level prospect. Came up for 9 games at the end of the season and scored 4 goals in 9 games.
Troy Stecher - Proved himself last year on D by making the the roster out of camp and staying there.
Erik Gudbranson - Middle aged (25) proven big, stay at home D man
Olie Joulevi - Big Finnish top D pair who does a lot of things right but maybe not PP quarterback
Sven Baertschi - coming off an 18 goals in 68 game campaign
Jonathan Dahlen - A level prospect picked up from Ottawa in the Burrows trade.
Nikolay Goldobin - A level prospect picked up from San Jose in the Hansen trade.
Reid Boucher - Picked up off the waiver wire from NJ played 27 games and showed more upside after getting in the lineup after the trade deadline.
Griffin Molino - undrafted Centre. Picked up late last year and played 5 games but showed some offensive promise.
Jake Virtanen(?) - former A level prospect. This was a big mistake by the organization.

Sbisa gone to Vegas by way of the expansion draft, which opens up another defensive position on the roster and $3.6M in cap space. With the departure of Tryamkin, Larson and Sbisa now, the Canucks are looking a little thin after the top 4-5 (Tanev, Edler, Hutton, Guddy, Stecher).

Opportunity for Joulevi to step in early but at 19 that seems to be rushing him along too fast. Interesting to see what the Canucks will do to fill the D hole as Biega won't be enough to fill the void.

I was at the Toyota Center today - the Kings training facility in LA with my boy who is taking skating lessons at Jamie Storr Goalie School. Much to our surprise, a bunch of NHLers mixed with WHLers were there who were training and Ryan Miller was tending one of the nets. Bernier was also there along with Bruce Orpik and Beau Bennett from the Devils among others. So after our practice, I blew off work and we stayed to watch their session. Amazing!

Miller's still got some serious game - best player on the ice. I spoke with him afterwards - although he was hopeful about re-signing with the Canucks was pretty frank about how painful this past season was - and the state of the team in general. Miller is a really thoughtful and cerebral guy. It was amazing how much time he gave to chat with us and how he continues to be inspired by the game. Says he has to prove an old netminder can shut down the young guns.

Hockey has such a great community no matter where you are. Alexander (my boy) is more of a Kings fan now (or just a student of the game in general), but was over the moon to meet him as he is a goalie in the making and still has a strong connection to Vancouver.

Pretty special moment for us thought it would be worth sharing. Great day. I love the off season.

Anywho......here is a round up of the Canucks 2017 entry draft.

Round 1, 5th overall: C Elias Pettersson

At No. 5, most Canucks fans had WHL Portland Winterhawks centre Cody Glass at the top of the list. Glass went to the Vegas Golden Knights sixth overall but the Canucks went with Swede Elias Pettersson. Good choice based on his background playing with Dahlen and their built in chemistry.

Despite Glass’s 94 points last season, he's more of a two-way guy with good but not outstanding offensive upside in the NHL. I may be wrong but Pettersson has higher ceiling and can be a dynamic game changer at a high level, which preferred at this draft position. Pettersson can skate, he’s smart, has incredible puck skills, excellent playmaking abilities and a dangerous shot. But he is paper thin and needs to fill out.

Round 2, 33rd overall: RW Kole Lind

Lind finished his draft year with 30 goals and 87 points in 70 games. He is an extremely smart player who knows how to get open in high-danger scoring areas, and excels at setting up teammates with great passes. In addition, Lind plays responsibly in all three zones -- making him a strong NHL prospect who could have been drafted in the first round.

Round 2, 55th overall: LW Jonah Gadjovich

The Canucks went with a Canadian junior player here.

Gadjovich scored 45 goals in 60 games last season. At 6'2 and over 200 pounds, he brings both size and scoring upside to the Canucks, which is something their prospect pool has been lacking. Though smaller players continue to find their place in a league that focuses more and more on speed and skill, big players like Milan Lucic can still be very important contributors. The biggest downside to Gadjovich’s game is his skating.....which is a concern.

Round 3, 64th overall: G Michael DiPietro

Most of Canucks Nation did not expect the team to target a goalie any time soon, having Thatcher Demko and Michael Garteig in the system. However, this pick was not made to fill an immediate need, as Michael DiPietro will take several years before making the jump to the NHL. By the time DiPietro plays in the NHL, Demko will be around 26, and Garteig’s first pro season did not promise an NHL career.

Having goaltending depth is never a bad idea, and DiPietro is extremely talented.

Round 4, 95th overall: D Jack Rathbone

Here the the Canucks go with an American high-school defenceman.
A smart, skilled defenceman who has the potential to be a power-play quarterback. In addition, scouts like that Rathbone has shown steady improvement throughout the year. The concern is that he played at a very low level last season (he’s also going back for another year) -- has a short frame and his defensive play has room for improvement.

Round 5, 135th overall: D Kristoffer Gunnarsson

He might make it to the NHL one day, but chances are that he won’t be more than a bottom-six or depth defender. You can get those for free in free agency every year, and the Canucks had options with more upside.

Round 6, 181th overall: LW Petrus Palmu

In the sixth round, the Canucks got back on track by selecting OHL winger Petrus Palmu. At 5'7, Palmu was the shortest player selected in the entire draft, but that’s a risk worth taking. In 2016-17, the Finn scored 40 goals and 98 points for the Owen Sound Attack. He is extremely fast, dynamic and smart, and has offensive upside.

Round 7, 188th overall: D Matthew Brassard

The last couple of rounds of the draft are a total crapshoot anyway. Sure, you can get Patric Hornqvist and Henrik Zetterberg, but if we knew what these players will become, they would not have fallen to the seventh round. The Canucks rounded out their 2017 draft with a two-way defenceman in his second year of eligibility, Matthew Brassard. A player with great tools who used the 2016-17 season to turn them into a strong overall game.

Overall, I guess the Canucks did a pretty solid job. Teams with many draft picks generally get higher draft grades than those with fewer, but the Canucks actually used their eight selections really well by adding balance and diversity but most of all skilled players with high ceilings. Seemed like a pretty weak draft as predicted.

The Canucks were busy on day one of free agency, adding Gagner, Del Zotto, Burmistrov, Wiercioch, Nilsson and bringing back Rodin.

Just a matter of needing bodies? Gagner will look good riding shotgun with the Sedins, if they go that route.

Too many bodies now.....guess the logic is they don't want to gift roster spots to the younger players and that they are looking for depth and placing guys in firmer roles both at NHL & AHL level. Maybe some trades are in the works but I doubt it. I

Swedish netminder Nilsson as backup netminder was a good pick up and he has history with Markstrom. I can see Del Zotto as an upgrade over Sbisa and they need a top 6 D anyways and could use Wiercioch as a depth guy.

The others? Admittedly I don't really know much about Burmistrov and I just don't see Rodin's body holding up.

They need an upgrade on their 29th ranked PP. I hope they use Gagner on the right side, in a reduced role and as PP specialist.

Have to wonder if Virtanen's days are numbered - he was unwilling to play on the 4th line last year with the big club but hard to see him higher than 3rd liner checker at best.

I say play the kids - the league has changed.

I'd say Sedin, Horvat, Granlund, Megna line up the middle, with Sutter and Burmistrov able to go back and forth. Gagner is solely a winger at this point.

I sorta don't hate the forward corps. Definitely a few candidates to overachieve.

Granlund found some chemistry with the twins last year.

Potential Line Combinations
Sedin - Sedin - Granlund
Baertschi - Horvat - Boeser
Erickson - Sutter - Molino/ Boucher
Gagner - Megna - Dorsett/ Virtanen

Defense
Edler - Tanev
Del Zotto - Gudbranson
Hutton - Stecher

Extras
Burmistrov
Gaunce
Chaput
Rodin
Dahlen

Defense
Wiercioch
Biega
Joulevi

But who the hell really knows that plan - there's a tonne of competition / interchangeability in the bottom six. I am really unsure about Dorsett's neck too.

Gagner scored most of his goals for the Jackets standing in the slot, betting they got him to play with the Sedins.

Yes but on the 1st unit PP. Gagner isn't the best skater and the Sedins are defensive liabilities now.

That's too bad. Even when they were still developing and I didn't think they'd amount to a whole lot they were still very solid defensively.

I suppose you're right, maybe as a power play unit but they will probably opt for something else at even strength.

We'll see what this guy does with the retooled roster.

Yeah Avs and Nucks are pretty much in the same boat after a consecutive dismal seasons.

Oh there's no one in the Avs' boat right now. What they achieved last season was a truly remarkable show of ineptitude with a good dose of hubris. We can only hope now that from the ashes of absolute devastation that the people in charge now know what NOT to do. And if not them then hopefully the people who replace them.

The Canucks remind me of the Avs right after the cap was put in place. They were clearly no longer contenders with an aging core of stars and limited resources. They managed to hire the right coach and put together some enjoyable seasons with a ragtag roster of cheaper under-the-radar signings to fill the gaps. In all honesty I'm glad the Avs at least tried to keep it going for a while.

It was only after time and a snowblower got the better of Joe Sakic and some very expensive and Ill-advised free agent acquisitions failed that the bottom dropped out (obviously not for the last time) and the Avs tanked for future trade bait Matt Duchene.

Horvat extended: 6 years, 33M. A very manageable 5.5M AAV.

Well that took long enough. A good deal for both Horvat and the Canucks. Maybe over pay him in the first couple of years but long term they are saving.

Only two games in and Travis Green is doing the two most annoying things NHL head coaches do: Bench the hotshot rookie to play it safe, and outright refusing to make any change in the lineup following a win.
