Wow, I'm in complete agreement with Jyrki. I've gone to the darkside and can no longer find any light at the end of the tunnel.

Well as best as I can tell they are either tanking intentionally, while cutting costs and not admitting to it so as not to panic the fanbase or tanking accidentally cause they have no clue. Hoping for the former but suspect the latter.

Wagner with a great summary on the firings.

http://passittobulis.blogspot.ca/2015/07/canucks-re-fire-gillis-by-proxy-firing.html#more

With $5.15 million tied up in two 4th line wingers you know Gillman has been out of the conversation for quite awhile. Enjoy your severance Laurence you deserve it.

I hope Gilman lands on his feet somewhere... He's performed brilliantly until Benning came on board. How does Delorme stay employed? :suicide:

Yeah I don't get the Kassian deal at all. I thought we were trying to get younger and acquire picks....Good Luck to Kass, I think he still has lots of upside

I'd like to throw in my 2 cents on this trade. I don't mind this trade at all...

Prust will NOT likely be a liability to Vancouver in the upcoming season. Most likely he will be an asset, as well a good mentor/example for young players. Pretty low risk. They know what they are getting. Dependable, consistent, 200ft player, hard working, even if a tad slower than years before. With Richardson gone, he'll be a great replacement as a PK specialist who adds an element of toughness and is only 1 year older. Perfect for a short term addition.

Despite rarely playing against top six opponents, Kassian was a minus player on a perennial plus team since he arrived in Vancouver. Due to his inconsistent effort, he was a poor mentor/example for young players and the team in general. He also takes lots of dumb, ill timed penalties. He'll score a few more goals, but he'll also likely be on the ice for more than his share against. There is a certain amount of risk here which may adversely affect his new team in multiple ways. Despite the wishes of many Canuck fans, he's not worth that much, especially considering he has not even remotely lived up to expectations (despite many opportunities), and is injury prone.

The Canucks will likely only need Prust for one year, possibly 2 if he comes cheap and impacts the youth and other teammates even more than expected. The Canucks don't need Kassian moving forward with their expected offensive youth coming up soon. His size & toughness was rarely effective or beneficial and, IMO, was overshadowed by his weaknesses. Montreal is looking for more offense and size. I wish them luck with Kassian, who does have decent hands, and their very minor cap space savings.

If MB can perform miracles on Kassian and get him responsible and play consistently with his head & heart (a big IF), the Habs will do fine with this trade.

I'm pretty sure the Canucks will immediately benefit from the trade for Prust and not miss Kassian at all. Can the Habs honestly say the same thing about trading for Kassian? MB has rolled the dice (albeit a small wager) but I not sure I like his odds.

The fifth round pick given back to Montreal reflects this.

BTW the Canucks can easily get back that 5th round pick (likely more) before the trade deadline by moving Prust. I'd rather see JV (or another young player) get a chance plus Prust, than another year of Kassian and a 5th.

This trade IS about the youth movement while still keeping the team competitive and motivated. Protecting and mentoring our youth... something Kassian would not have given the Canucks.

Alex! Good to see ya, man.

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows
Higgins - Bonino - Vrbata
Prust - Horvat - Hansen
Kenins/Vey/Dorsett

Edler - Tanev
Hamhuis - Weber
Bartkowski - Sbisa

Miller
Markstrom

Callups: Baertschi, Shinkaruk

No idea if the Canucks have an up-and-coming D-man. Corrado perhaps?

Clandening and Baertschi have to go through waivers so expect them to make the team

Probably more like this

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows
Baertschi - Bonino - Vrbata
Higgins - Horvat - Hansen
Prust - Vey - Dorsett
Kenins - Guance? - Virtanen

Edler - Tanev
Hamhuis - Weber
Bartkowski - Clandening
Sbisa

Miller
Markstrom

Corrado will be first call up. The pisser is that for a team that wants to get younger Prust is getting in the way of Kenins

I don't expect all of Higgins, Hansen and/or Burrows will make it through the season and will be traded. Injuries, and how well the team plays, especially the younger kids, will determine when they start pulling the trigger.

The "real" youth movement will likely begin next season.

Maybe that's why they brought in Prust. To push and groom Ronald McDonald.

I'm hopeful that Subban will push for a spot ahead of Sbisa.

Read this, this morning and it really resonated with me. I can live with most of what has transpired except for the Gilman firing: http://canucksarmy.com/2015/7/5/laurenc ... ont-office

In light of the gross overpayment for Sbisa and Dorsett, I'm not surprised that Gilman was probably not involved... Welcome to the Pac Division cellar! :chris18:

It's interesting how quickly the media has turned on Benning. It took a long time for Gillis to reach this level. He's either a genius seeing things beyond the limits of the rest of us or more likely a massive screw up promoted well beyond his ability level.

Indeed, most of us would be happy to be promoted to the level of our incompetence... Every day seems to be a new revelation that he's skipped over a couple of layers of management training...

It's a strange world when I look enviously on the management of Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg.

Oh god.

Chalk this up as another head scratching move he's made over the last year:

- Miller signing
- Lack Trade
- Bieksa gaff
- Kassian trade + 5th rounder for Prust
- Gross overpayment signing Sbisa
- Gross overpayment signing Dorsett
- Letting Matthias walk

I could live with the Lack deal and can see the logic in not having another Luongo/ Schneider situation transpire - but only if that was the only deal with curious implications. Taken in light of the Miller signing and gross overpayment, it remains an example of poor asset management.

Leafs sign Shawn Matthias to a one year deal. Has the size and skill to be a solid centre, but he probably maxes out as a third-liner.

Good signing by the Leafs - agree with the overview. He's a strong third liner though and if he keeps up his work ethic, he'll be good for 15-20 goals next year.

I am baffled at how/why Benning would sign an older, smaller 4th line player in Prust, with less of an upside to slightly more money, yet not be able to see the value in getting a deal done to keep Matthias next year instead.

Well he gave up Kassian, a player for even less money (and a pick) and just as much upside as Matthias. The Benning priority list seems to be:

1. Good in the room
2. Face punching
3. Grit
4. Skill
5. Money
6. Potential development

Although that list doesn't quite explain away the Bieksa trade or the Sbisa signing unless Sbisa's fellatio skills are beyond compare.

I actually found some of the comments to the blog post more insightful than the article itself.
