CoHo should really be placed in here in the Baby Canucks thread with the rest of the team's prospects. That is until he makes the cut... Shirokov is the other one who might earn a nine-game tryout.

Prospect training camp updates; lots of love for Sergei Shirokov here and again, here... Is Prab Rai ready to take the next step up to the E, or even possibly, Manitoba?

Unlocked to provide the following updates (not sure if the last two have been posted in here before, and too lazy to look):
  • NCAA Cannots update, 1/25/10. Basically, J Schroeder remains the singular bright spot for the Cannots.
  • AHL/ECHL Prospects update, 12/24/09.
  • Junior Prospects update, 11/18/09.

re: #11, Prab Rai -

Vancouver Canucks President and General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have signed 2008 draft pick, forward Prab Rai.
Rai, 20, led the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL in scoring (41-28-69) and goals (41) in 67 games played during the 2009-10 campaign.

Normally, I'd say this means he'll see some time in Victoria with the Salmon Kings, but how often does the big club sign players to play on their ECHL affiliate? Perhaps they're thinking that Scott Arniel needs more scoring help in Manitoba. It'll be interesting to see where he ends up either way...

All players are signed by the organization with the idea of them climbing as high as they can -- I don't think the Canucks are signing "for" the ECHL or AHL, per se.

Since leaving U of MN, Schroeder has impressed and has 6 pts in 4 games for the Moose.

EDIT: In addition to signing Aaron Volpatti, the Canucks also signed Stefan Schneider, formerly of the Portland Winter Hawks, to an entry level contract... Both are now with the Moose...

Oh dear, what an unfortunate name for a guy trying to make it in the pros...

CoHo's postseason with the Brampton Battalion may only last for one more game... I suspect this means that barring injury, he'll see some time with the Moose and possibly even Vancouver (if they last that long...)

There's a rumor going around in HF that Anton Rodin, the Cannots' 2nd round pick in 2009, is close to signing.

Amazing what GMMG has been able to do for the prospect base in the time that he's been here - under GMDN, their HF ranking was bottom-third in the league, whereas they are now in the Top Ten. Although that will surely take a hit if CoHo ends up in the lineip next October and Cory Schneider gets traded (inevitable, IMO).

I point out that a lot of the guys on their list are Nonis picks... not to mention those that have made the team (Raymond, Edler, Hansen, Rypien (undrafted but signed)). It's not as lopsided as some have suggested, particularly because Gillis' drafts are all pretty recent.

Well then pat GMMG on the back for not giving away those prospects (save for the forgettable Patrick White and Daniel Rahimi)... Speaking of prospects, the Brampton Battalion's post-season is done, and CoHo is coming to Vancouver to be evaluated by medical staff; given the depth on the forward lines, I'd say there is a better than chance that CoHo will be sent to Manitoba to help the Moose's playoff hopes, but perhaps not right away.

Wait, whose medical staff? The Canucks!?

As Cali used to say, "That oughta go off like a fart in church." :rimshot:

The Moose' head coach, Scott Arniel is talking like it's a done deal that he'll be sent to Manitoba, but I wonder if the Canucks will keep him in town on the pretense that he'll need his foot (he broke his toe late in the season before returning for the first round of the playoffs) to heal completely before he gets any time to play for the Moose. If the Moose go out in the first round, the Canucks can have him rehab with the team...

GIANT SIGNING: The Canucks on Wednesday announced the signing of Vancouver Giants defenceman Kevin Connauton, who was Vancouver's third-round pick in last summer's draft.

The 20-year-old Connauton appeared in 69 games with the Giants this past season and tied for the WHL scoring lead for defenceman with 72 points. He had 13 more points in 16 playoff games with the Giants.

"First of all, he's had a tremendous evolution from the point where we drafted him through his tenure with the Vancouver Giants," said Canucks assistant general manager Laurence Gilman. "Are we surprised with the speed with which he developed? Yes, that's a testament to his hard work and the work of Don Hay and the Giants' program."

Now that Scott Arniel has gone to Columbus, the Moose will be on the lookout for their next head coach. I read on HFBoards that the Jackets had basically offered the Canucks a coach trade, whereby their former AHL coach Claude Noël (who took over CBJ on an interim basis when Hitchcock got fired) would go to Manitoba.
