Not so much about his worth, it's the impact this has on value of other players. He'll be eminently more moveable come July 1 though, so smart move by Gilman/ Dubas.

Makes one wonder if these tools are negotiated under the auspice of 'full information' by the NHL regardin the nuances of the CBA or if they are just simply missed.

Deals like this pretty much ensure another lockout. But I guess that's the nature of the beast.

The Leafs employ Brendan Pridham, one of the main architects of the CBA. Handy if you want to understand the nuances of maneuvering within the cap.

Quote:
“I think we always tried to remain optimistic and have faith that our offers were fair and they were coming from a good place as well, and that, in the end, him missing a full season and having it go across five o’clock today wouldn’t have been good for anybody – not for the team, not for William,” Dubas said. “So you always kind of maintain that faith. As it gets closer to the deadline you start to maybe doubt it a little bit, but in the end we’re happy that it ended with him signing for sure.”

For me, this is what it came down to. At some point you need to take a deep breath, step back and evaluate why you're heading in the direction you are. Sounds like common sense prevailed here. People might think the $ value is too high, but we're talking a 22-year old player. This isn't a 29-year old hitting the wrong side of the aging curve.

I don't think it is a brutal deal by any stretch, but I suspect he priced himself out of the Leafs long term plans by about 500K per on the cap hit. All the while allowing them to get a pretty good test to how the offense would survive without him...turns out pretty good.

I know it was a tough negotiation, but I foresee the Leafs keeping him, and going more the Penguins route of jettisoning the mid-level guys. They'll probably keep a very expensive top 6, then go with guys on ELCs or close to it for the bottom 6. Maybe veteran grinders on the 4th line, who give a discount for a chance to be on a really good team in their twilight years.
I mean, the Marlies won the Calder last year. They've obviously got talent in the system that could replace the bottom 6 guys.
Or they could move one of the seemingly superfluous talented forwards for some D help. Either way, Lou set this team up very well for Dubas to look good.

Nope, especially when Hayes tried to hit back at Ray's comment about Hayes hosting with a comment about between the benches and Ray was just "correct". So many excellent points there.

Well with Matthews deal and this one have to say feels like Dubas is now going to have to pay above expectation on Marner next. Should have been a hardass and let Nylander sit the year as now the players expect him to cave and will continue to push for the absolute top dollar.
