Comfortable win for the Leafs but not as crazy as the score would make it seem. Avs let there goalie get shell shocked in the first and the guy was never in a good place again even when the Avs started pressing in 2nd.
Matthews should never have as much time in the goalies lap as he had that game but I am still impressed of how aware he is that he has all the time considering he should not be expecting it. As well as a goalie I appreciated that when he got the Leafs 7th of the night and completed his hatty he still looked guilty as fuck for adding to that poor goalies miserable night.
They shat the bed in the first for sure, no excuse there, but they were starting to battle back in the 2nd, then inexplicably, Tyson Jost, the worst guy on the team to win faceoffs, takes a defensive zone draw even after Jayson Megna gets kicked out of the circle, even though Darren Helm is RIGHT FUCKING THERE. Even though Jost got beat cleanly and they kicked it over to Travis Dermott, that's a very stoppable shot. The minute JoJo let THAT one in, you could tell the Avs were more or less done. He only got worse from there.
Nightmare night for the third pairing of Johnson and Johnson. That might have been the worst game I've ever see Erik Johnson play. He got beat EVERYWHERE, and on the shot share charts, that pairing and the horrid fourth line got completely caved in every time they took the ice.
But in the end, one goalie made the stops, one didn't.
Avs are debating whether or not to start 21-year-old Justus Annunen tonight in Montreal, but Bednar refused to commit to naming anyone at last night's presser. The other option would be to send Johanssen out there but Jesus Christ, at that point I'd start feeling sorry for the guy.
