Leafs get a new number one from Anaheim: Danish G Frederik Anderson for the 30th and a 2nd rounder in 2017.

They also signed him to a five-year deal.

Have not seen much of him due to time zone but he has size and clearly the Leafs management like him as they are committed.

Hell if they got it right they are not far off having that core in place that can be something.

Kind of a curious move because of the average aging curve of goalies. He'll be 27 when the season starts and if the Leafs won't be competing for another season or two he'll be 29 2 seasons from now, when goalies are usually on the decline. He doesn't have a lot of miles on him though. Guess we will see.

He talked about Reimer being available and some stat similarities. No secret I am a Reimer fan but admit that one thing Reimer does not do well that does not show up in most stats effectively is make the game easier on his D via puck control. Be it playing the puck, rebounds, and just generic squirrelyness(if that is a word. ;) ) he can be hard to predict for his D and add extra pressure. I have read that Andersen is better at those things.

With Anderson, Kadri, and Rielly being signed up to 5-6 year deals for a total of 14.5 million a year I just don't see this as a Leaf team that is factoring in the big deal it would take to sign Stamkos. Not saying they could not create the space just saying I see it as a sign they are likely not the most motivated for him or do not see him as interested in them.

So the Leafs parlay a piece of the Phil Kessel trade to get Kerby Rychel.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/mapl ... ets-trade/

I was wondering why in hell Kekäläinen was doing this deal, then I read Rychel wanted out of Columbus. Bummer for them, because it doesn't look like they got a great return here.

Matt Martin, 4 years, $10 million. I have to think Babcock for whatever reason pushed for that signing, 'cause you sure as hell gotta think Dubas and his team were emphatically against it.

The Prust deal. Worked out for two years. Not bad if they can cut bait before he really declines.

Bernier to Anaheim for a conditional pick.

https://sports.vice.com/ca/article/down ... c-bergevin

Quote:
But last week, the Maple Leafs traded Jonathan Bernier to the Ducks for a conditional draft pick. That's the league's biggest market, trading away a guy who went into last season as their unquestioned starter. It's not a blockbuster by any stretch, but it's no minor deal. And yet nobody has any clue what the conditions are, or what picks might be involved. Is it a first? A seventh? For next year, or down the line? And what happens if the conditions aren't reached? Worse pick? No pick at all? This stuff kind of matters. You can't evaluate the trade without this information. And yet, we don't have it.

Needless to say, this is pretty much standard procedure. "Conditional pick," we're told. "Um, can you be more specific?" we ask. "No, but keep handing over your money you dumb suckers," says the NHL, and then it laughs and laughs. (For 15 minutes, at which point a media insider inevitably spills the beans. But they're all vacation now, which I will remind you should never be allowed.)

And yes, we can probably guess what's happening in this particular case. The Leafs made another trade with the Ducks just last month. It sure looks as if Bernier was actually part of that deal, and the two teams waited until his July 1 signing bonus had been paid by Toronto before making things official. The "conditional pick" here is almost certainly nothing at all, and the Ducks and Leafs are just gaming the system. But there's no good reason they should be able to without at least admitting it publicly, other than that everyone else does, all the time, because that's how this league works.

"Gaming the system" seems kinda over reaction of a way to describe it. Just cause they do not discuss something with the press does not mean they are hiding it. Seems they now just do not share info with the press, and with the track record do not blame them.

Auston Matthews finally signs his ELC.

Was playing in Europe part of a larger strategy to gain leverage with his first NHL deal?

No. First overall picks will always get the max bonus amounts possible. Only thing is which ones and how easy they are to reach them which is negotiable, I believe. Teams aren't going to fuck around and lose a first overall pick. McDavid earned his max possible salary of $3,775,000 even though he only played in 45 games, reaching the big 43-game cutoff for the schedule A bonuses.

Mark Hunter strong-arms his way into an assistant GM position. Cronyism wins again in the NHL. Time to sign some grinders.
