For Nate Horton, who might never play hockey again.

Straight hockey deal, no money changed hands.

Here's bottom line on Clarkson-Horton trade: Horton's contract wasn't insured. CBJ paying him to sit in stands and he's longshot to play.

Quote:
CBJ would rather pay Clarkson and have the player in the lineup. TOR must pay Horton's salary so there's no actual $ saving, BUT...

Quote:
...TOR gets to put Horton on LTIR and use his cap hit $ elsewhere. so the net result is TOR loses David Clarkson's cap hit for the duration.

Quote:
Huge cap maneuver for TOR. They lose Clarkson's contract entirely, must pay Horton to not play but get to use Horton's cap dollars elsewhere

Holy shit. Nonis pulls off a Lamoriello-esque move, he somehow falls knee-deep in shit and manages to paddle his way out of it.

Wow. Toronto being rich as fuck gets this done. Columbus gets a warm body for it's money, Toronto gets LTIR exemption.

Nathan Horton's career seemingly being ended basically became the only way for the Leafs to rid themselves of the David Clarkson contract.

Leafs have done plenty of what the opposite of cap circumvention is, so maybe this balances it out.

Nono should be allowed to keep his job if he can find a way to ship out Lupul's contract too.

Well his boss is paying big bucks to make the Mistake go away in this deal. This team is Dubas's next year I suspect.

Apparently Columbus approached the Leafs about making the deal, not the other way around.

Wow. Just. Wow. I saw the headline on TSN & thought someone hacked their site. I guess it makes sense, in a "we both gave out really shitty contracts and here's the best (& only) way to make some good out of them" way.

My biggest question is- how the fuck was Horton's contract not insured?

I was curious about that as well. Wasn't it known that he was injured when they signed him? I wonder if they simply couldn't get someone to insure it(or at least for a not insane price).

That may be true, as he had a pretty extensive prior history. Makes that contract decision even dumber.

Life in a market like Columbus: have to take massive risks in order to acquire talent. A healthy Horton is worth that money, and I guess they played a high risk gamble and lost badly.

I guess insurance companies looked at the contract, looked at his history, and laughed; loudly and long.

But that makes me wonder if GMs don't check on stuff like that before offering such a contract.

 Did they check if Clarkson's contract is insured??? It would be funny as hell if it isn't.

There's no injury concerns with Clarkson to worry about

Bobby Mac explained the insurance thing yesterday.

When the Jackets signed Horton he was already hurt with a shoulder injury, so they had to wait until he was healthy before insuring the contract. Unfortunately they weren't able to get it done in time between his return and when he went down with his current career-ending back condition.

Hey hey hey- potentially career-ending back condition.

Sask- I assume you were joking by saying there are no injury concerns with Clarkson. There are always injury concerns for hockey players. But again, I assume you were joking.
