They are right now on pace to be the second worst PK team since they started keeping track of the numbers nearly fifty years ago. And they are the worst relative to the league average penalty kill in that time frame.

Tom Awad, who came up with the VUKOTA system which I can't pretend to even grasp at this point (something about figuring out how much every player is worth team points wise to his NHL team, then adding them up), says that the Leafs have a horrid cocktail of a high number of shots against on the PK, a high number of dangerous chances against, and piss poor goaltending. In short, they suck balls.

Granted, goalie-wise and personel wise (especially the forwards), this group certainly could form the perfect storm of PK failure. That said, I think PK stats this bad have to come down to coaching, and to a lesser extent lack of locker-room leadership. The Leafs on the PK always seem to form into the most passive box I've ever seen, like they are rooted there and scared to move more than a foot out of position. Actually, all this year, in all things, this group looks like a group that has a) been yelled at a lot, and b) not been clearly told what they actually need to do to stop the yelling, or to succeed in hockey in general. Just scared to do anything.

Basically, RW must go...

Pfft. I believe Ron Wilson. It's all the players and the media's fault! Damn media shouldn't be allowed at practices, how do they expect the Leafs to be able to get anything done?

His rapid accent through the OTP money league has kept some of us well aware of his looming.

What a difference a player makes. Sjostrom, not Phaneuf.

The thing about Giguere is so far the team in general just seems to just be far more relaxed than they have been with the other Goalie options.
