Vasilevskiy: 6-1-1, 1.50 GAA (leads league), 0.951 save % (leads league)

Bishop: 7-8, 3.04 GAA, .902 save %

Clearly the plan in TBay was for Bishop to be the clear #1 and Vasi play 20-30 games while being groomed to be the goalie of the future starting next year with Big Ben a UFA. Vasi is really forcing the issue but so far doens't seem like TBay management is budging on their plan, and are going to give Bishop a long leash. With Stamkos out for months though TBay can't afford to give away any games.

Could it be they're playing Bishop in the hopes he recovers to the point that he's tradeable?

^^^probably. But if going on a serious Cup run better to have Vasi + Bishop than Vasi + Gudslevekis (sp). But then Bishop walks for nothing as UFA, which Stevie Y has probably accepted.

Considering how tight they are against the cap, dealing Bishop somewhere for a pick, then using the cap money on a more immediate need (like a rental to replace Stamkos if he doesn't recover in time) is a card Stevie can play.

Looks like I jinxed Vasilevskiy as he had his worst game of the year after this thread. But looks like they are going back to him tonight, 1st consecutive starts of the season.

Controversy over, for real this time: Bishop traded to LA for Budaj.

From Vezina candidate to low-end rental.

Stevie Y says there was no market for goalies, it was this deal or stand pat. Don't really get why the Kings did this after Budaj served them so well.

Salary dump for another move?

I get it from LA's perspective- they get an upgrade, who probably pushes quick to be better. Or, they put in Bishop.

The Bishop deal was so no bonus overages land on next year's cap. Yzerman has also said they're trying to make the playoffs, but I can't imagine they're clearing cap room to trade for someone else.

Andrei Vasilevskiy signs an 8-year extension that kicks in next season: $9.5M AAV, almost $45M in bonuses

Wow...I feel like any deal that's higher than 5X5 is pretty risky for a goalie, but I suppose if you want to go big, go big with a Vezina winner while he's still young.

Does that mean Kucherov eventually becomes the odd man out? Not sure you can have Stamkos-Kooch-Point-Vassy making 36-40M on the cap.

They'll go full jetsam with Gourde, Palat, Johnson, and/or Sergachev before they'd even think about ever losing Kooch.

Stamkos, Kucherov, Point, Hedman, and Vasilevskiy are the core of this team going forward. I think if they REALLY had to, they'd dump Stamkos first before those other guys. But I think they'd just pull a Chicago and keep moving various pieces around those guys in hopes they get the right mix.
