Good luck Stevey Y! You da man. This has happened earlier than I thought it would be. I figured that he would stick around Detroti for a few more years. Luckily he hasn't gone to a team that I despise!

Now do your old buddies in Detroit a favour and trade is Marty St Louis!

5 years, $2.5m a year according to Mirtle. He's climbing the payscale again... most he's made since before the lockout!

Did they pay for his flight out to Tampa, or did Yzerman have to pay his own way since it wasn't directly hockey-related?

Great perspective on this from someone: If Yzerman turns out to be a disaster as a GM, then at least it won't be the Wings that he messes up!

Very interesting to see both Yzerman and Sakic, two guys we watched in their respective primes, now GMs. Yzerman has obviously been pretty amazing, Sakic has had some pretty bad stumbles both nothing awful so far. Yzerman definitely had the benefit of studying under a much better-structured organization that embraced analytics as opposed to one that was seemingly in a constant state of flux.

 Yeah...no. Better structured maybe but they have definitely not embraced analytics as much as they should have with roster decisions.

Well, they're still the model organization when it comes to drafting and developing talent. Chicago modeled themselves after Detroit, and obviously Tampa did as well. Toronto is doing the same. And we've seen ALL of those organizations make very old school-type decisions. Some very recently. And I think that'll always happen. Coaches by their very nature are going to be more old school than the front office that employs them, and there will always be old school personalities in the organization pushing for MOAR GRIT, MOAR LEADERSHIP. The key is appeasing those folks while not stepping headlong into a Dave Clarkson-type disaster.

How Stevie Y messed up Tampa's cap situation: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/what-we-le ... soc_trk=tw

At the time the Callahan, Filppula and Killorn signings seemed questionable. In hindsight they look disastrous considering Kucherov remains unsigned and they have multiple RFAs next season.

The dropping Cdn dollar and stagnant cap didn't help the situation either, that's for sure. I can't remember when exactly the deals were signed relative to those factors. The worst deal of all might have been the Coburn deal, though.

The Killorn signing made absoultely no sense, it really looks bad now. Callahan should've been cut loose after that trade...I don't suppose Yzerman is just hoping he gets hurt so he can use the LTIR space...?

Killorn deal was terrible, Cobourn not great. Callahan at least back then he was seen as a heart-and-soul-intangibles type who could also score 50-60 points so not a terrible deal relative to his market value at the time but in hindsight brutal.

They have so many good prospects maybe they can package one with a bad contract. Doesn't seem like trading Bishop will happen this year.

Sweet jesus that Killorn contract now that I look at it. Almost exactly the same as Abdelkader but he's 2 years younger and has two very productive playoffs relative to his regular seasons under his belt.

I had forgotten just how bad that Killorn contract was.

I honestly think Yzerman thought Stamkos's departure was a foregone conclusion and took steps to fill the potential gaps where he could. Still bad decisions but somewhat understandable.

Kucherov takes the 'Stevie Y Discount' and signs 3 years at $14m = $4.7m per year for a guy who could easily get $6m+ on the open market. Wow. Well played Stevie Y. :golfclap:

The Kucherov contract...my god.

That spinorama on a dime is amazing. Kucherov just kind of looks like he floats on his skates. Just needs the briefest touch on the puck and something happens.

Van Damme. Think Stevie Y drugs the players before offering a contract? They should all be piss tested for their own benefit.

I think Stevie Y should have been tested after signing Dan Girardi to that contract.

It's really odd to me how the three clubs who reportedly adhere pretty strictly to analytics (Chicago, Detroit, Tampa Bay) have some pretty bad contracts on their books...Chicago especially.
