Here's how the lineup appears to have shaken out:

Marleau - Thornton - Pavelski
Clowe- Couture - Havlat
Mitchell - Handzus - Wingels
Winchester / Desjardins / ferrerio / McGinn / murray

Boyle-Murray
Burns-Vlasic
Demers-White
Vandemeer/Braun

Niemi / Greiss / Niitty

Top 2 lines should be as good as any in the league.

Wingels surprised in preseason and looks to have won a 3rd line spot for now but Ferrerio and McGinn will be fighting for that spot all year. I like Desjardins' game. A 4th line of McGinn, Desjardins and Ferrerio could actually be pretty sweet. I didn't realize the Sharks had picked up Winchester, he will likely spend a lot of time in the press box.

With White, Burns and Vandemeer added the D goes from soft to solid. I always felt a big problem for the Sharks was that Murray was their only D who could really hit anybody. I like this D a lot, we'll see how it works out.

Haha, JT may have got himself involved in a very minor verbal controversy, with some funny consequences.

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/sharks/2011/11/01/what-theyre-saying-about-thorntons-post-game-shot-at-rangers-probably-the-softest-team-we-played-against-on-this-road-trip/

Regarding last night's game vs. the Rangers (5-2 loss for the Sharks) Joe said:

Quote:
“To be honest with you, they were probably the softest team we played against on this road trip and we should have had the two points,” the Sharks captain said. “We played some good teams and I think we should have beaten these guys.”

to which yahoo's Puck Daddy responded:
Quote:
Joe Thornton calling someone or something else “soft” is like Tony Romo questioning another quarterback’s late-game mental fortitude. It’s like Jay Leno calling another comedian “stale.”

....

Seriously, a player from a California team calling a New York team “soft”? This is how hip-hop wars start …

:laap:

Aaaaaaand Torts's response:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_d ... hl-wp16396

Quote:
"Yeah it caught me off-guard when it was brought up after the game," Tortorella said at the team's Greenburgh practice facility Tuesday morning. "It surprised me, and I've never heard a player say that. Joe's a heck of a player, but here's a player popping off about our team, and Joe hasn't won a g--damn thing in this league. He could go down as a player, being one of the better players in our league never to win anything. So what he should do is just shut up. It was uncalled for, it was classless, and I've never had it happen like that before."

Hells yeah...this year's HBO 24/7 is gonna be awesome!

Solid game vs. the Kings last night.

Couture is flying out there, the kid is the real deal. First line for the past 2 games has been Pavelski-JT-Couture and they are dominating. Boyle had a great game last night, he basically toyed with the Kings while setting up the Marleau goal it was a very cool play.

Jesus, who's playing center on the 2nd line then?

Marleau. But ya watching the game last night I was thinking the same thing, it is a line of 3 centers! And the third line has 2 centers - Zus and Mitchell. I would think JT's faceoff % should go up since he can cheat on every faceoff without worrying about getting thrown out.

This thread should be retitled the "Official WTF is Wrong with the Sharks!? Thread."

Seriously...once again, the talent is there. Could it be they severely underestimated the loss of depth on the wings trading both Seto AND Heatley presented? Is Havlat just becoming a marginal player? Did they overestimate the impact Brent Burns would have? Is Dan Boyle starting to show his age? What the hell is going on? These guys should be running away with the division, especially with the Kings being so inconsistent.

One thing's for sure, the Wylde right now look like they got the better end of both trades, which is freaking ridiculous.

Agree... I think everyone keeps waiting for the Wylde to start stumbling... But Havlat hadn't impressed me since he left the 'Hawks; he only seemed to be dangerous against Vancouver in a Pavol Demitra sort of way, which is to say, he was dangerous on occasion but never really consistently so. Count me among those who thought that Burns would have more of an impact. Post-fat contract doldrums, I suppose.

Other than the Hawks and the cough-cough-Wylde, the West just doesn't seem to be as tough as they have been in the past...

The Coyotes are full marks for their rise to prominence. The Sharks are confusing, it could be an age thing, but I don't think they're that old... The Wild, meh, they'll suck it up in the 2nd half.

The Red Wings are still dangerous, and the Blues... look out for them. And, of course, the Canucks. But yeah, something has gone completely sucky in California this year.

Havlat is very disappointing. Started out well but total floater lately.

Burns has been great, Sharks won that trade big time IMO as Seto isn't exactly lighting up Minny (yet).

Boyle is having a terrible season, not sure what his problem is.

Couture started quiet but has been one of the best players recently. Pavelski sort of the reverse, had an amazing start but quiet lately. JT has been hot and cold, Marleau too. 3rd and 4th lines have had their moments but aren't really capable of carrying the load when the top-6 struggles.

Looks like they just need a good kick in the ass. The coach is in no danger so it will have to come from somewhere else. I feel like they are going to turn on the jets after xmas and go on a huge run.

I saw a thread header in the Sharks forum that read something like "Torrey Mitchell is completely useless!!!" so I imagine he's not exactly doing great either.

Long term, SJ paid a heavy price. They gave up their top prospect in an extremely weak prospect pool in addition to Seto. And if everything about Coyle is to be believed, well, I'm just glad the Wylde are getting the hell out of our division before they REALLY get good.

Sure looks like both Ottawa and Chicago utilized Havlat properly as a 3rd line guy/PP specialist. Every time I've seen him tried in a top-6 role he just looks lost.

It's a long season yet...they could put on a 2nd half surge a la Buffalo...but something tells me it's gotten stale in Silicon Valley. Might be high time to make a major, major trade. And by major I mean consider moving Marleau out (no way do they deal Thornton).

Hockey + Ren Fair.

I'm still amazed at the detail & proportion accuracy.

Pretty clear McLellan is fed up with his stars and chose to send a message in the shootout last night against the Avs. He sent Handzus, Havlat, Pavelski, Clowe, and Winchester out there...no Thornton, no Marleau, no Couture, no Boyle. Wow. They're calling for his head on HF, which I find hilarious. The Avs on the other hand sent out Hejduk, Duchene, O'Reilly, Jones, and Landeskog.

I think the Sharks could still have a championship-caliber team if they went with a center corps of Couture/Pavelski/Handzus and got some great wingers/defensemen in return for Thornton/Marleau/Havlat. Yes...I'm advocating they blow it up. It's not working, and it'll never work, and ownership needs to admit it. I'm assuming those players have some kind of protection against trades in addition to some pretty hefty contracts, but if Scott Gomez can be traded, anyone can.

Last shootout vs. Habs I know Handzus, Havlat and Pavelski scored and Couture and Boyle did not. But ya Winchester sounds like some kind of message!

Havlat 1 goal in 24 games, that is fucking disastrous.

I can't believe McLellan is in any danger. I am still expecting the Sharks to turn it on and go on a huge run. Havlat playing like he gives a flying fuck would really help.

Suddenly the Sharks are in a dogfight to make the playoffs. Hopefully Havlat coming back soon helps. They have 5 games left vs. Phoenix and 3 vs. Dallas, they need to put the boots to those scrubs lock up the division!

I refuse to believe this year's middling performance has anything to do with the loss of Heatley or Setoguchi. Heatley sucked and Setoguchi was wildly inconsistent and neither are doing squat in Minnesota.

I guess heads have to roll if they don't make the playoffs but I can't imagine DW or Mclellan getting canned.
