Terrible accident. Given how sharp skate blades are, it's almost a miracle this doesn't happen more often.

Is this the first time in pro hockey someone has died from a skate blade to the neck? There have been some really close calls, notably Clint Malarchuk and Richard Zednik, but both of them survived.

Just horrible.

Do NOT watch the video of the incident. Do not.

I’m also unfortunately seeing a racist contingent online that’s going out of their way to accuse Matt Petgrave of purposely kicking up his skate to strike Johnson, which is ridiculous.

Neck protection. Make it mandatory right fucking now, NHL.

Dubas is making neck guards mandatory throughout the org.

Didn't watch the video and am not going to....but the cops are up to something and clearly not labeling it an accident.

Well, it's an arrest, charges haven't officially been filed yet but yeah...this is curious.

Yes, do NOT watch the video. At first glance it does look kinda bad because Petgrave's leg goes flying in the air after he gets knocked off-balance but I still refuse to believe he did that on purpose. For him to land a kick at full speed like that right in the guy's neck he'd have to possess unreal hand-eye coordination.

I'm wondering if "manslaughter" means something different in the UK and the requirement to be met is a bit lower than the reckless disregard we might have?

This Sportsnet article addresses that a bit.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/article ... ckey-game/

It definitely means what we think it does.

Quote:
According to the Crown Prosecution Service website in the United Kingdom, manslaughter "is primarily committed in one of three ways."

"1. Killing with the intent for murder but where a partial defence applies, namely loss of control, diminished responsibility or killing pursuant to a suicide pact.

"2. Conduct that was grossly negligent given the risk of death, and did kill ("gross negligence manslaughter"); and

"3. Conduct taking the form of an unlawful act involving a danger of some harm that resulted in death ('unlawful and dangerous act manslaughter')."

I would imagine the only thing they have is gross negligence unless players heard him say....watch this. Or he was practicing his wheel kick on skates yelling Donald like phrases. I am not trying to belittle the fact that Adam Johnson lost his life in what most of us think is an accident.

This is indeed most curious as the Professor states.

Quote:
Halloran said that involuntary or unlawful act manslaughter is “when an unlawful killing has taken place but there was no intention to kill or to cause grievous bodily harm.”

In the case of voluntary manslaughter, all the elements for murder are present, including an intention to kill or cause serious harm, but the crime has been reduced to manslaughter by reason of loss of control or diminished responsibility due to a recognized mental condition.

If that's the case then this has the potential to be a witch hunt.
