Kinda wish we'd put our best checkers together to try and shut down Crosby/Malkin, but I'm sure the lineup will stay the same. Getting a little tired of seeing Ryan Wilson struggle to keep up with a guy going half-speed down low. I realize he's a slow skater with a bum knee, but still.

It'll be Giguere vs. Fleury in nets, in addition to the Cole Harbour faceoff up front.

1 period in, Pens definitely dominated the play (Avs committed four penalties) with an 11-4 shot advantage, yet thankfully the score is still 0-0.

I kinda wish the team would eventually move Steve Downie on his merry way. Doesn't seem to serve much purpose these days other than take the obligatory dumb penalty.

End of 2, Avs holding onto a 1-0 lead despite getting heavily outshot. Colorado surviving thanks to a lot of shot blocking and solid goaltending from Giguere.

AVS WIN! AVS WIN!

What everyone thought would be an offensive free-for-all ends up being a defensive slugfest. Avs win 1-0. Giguere with the well-earned shutout (shots were 34-14!) but most of that was the result of the Avs taking too many penalties. For the most part I thought the Avs had a pretty good defensive effort.

Nate Guenin has been fantastic for the Avs so far. He's like Ryan O'Byrne with actual smarts and talent. Thankfully the ref called Jokinen on that horrible dive.

Usually Roy uses Landy-Stazz-Tangs as his shutdown unit, but this time he sent out his top line of O'Reilly-Duchene-Downie against Crosby and Stastny's line out against Malkin. It appeared to work--neither really got a lot going.

MacKinnon wasn't very noticeable this game. He's getting into a bad habit of staying on the perimeter--his points came from digging around in the corners and getting passes to the middle. Needs to get that part of his game back on track.

Also, no surprise, the Penguins have two very dangerous weapons in Malkin and Crosby, but their depth this year is abysmal. Of course it ain't helping that both Neal and Letang are hurt.

Or the fact that they have like 2/3 of their cap space tied up in 4 guys.

I think that's why Shero went for broke at the trade deadline last season--he knew he was going to have severe cap constraints the following season. Of course one could argue those acquisitions actually made the team a lot slower, and therefore hampered more than helped. Once the cap goes up it'll be interesting to see what he does. He certainly can't be happy with Chuck freakin' Kobasew in his top six.

That's why I keep hoping attendance falls off & the cap goes down. :D Really screw teams like them.

What would happen if one year fans decided to essentially boycott going to games, causing the cap to drop off big time? Is there a max it can rise/fall every year? Could it get so low over a few years that teams would have to waive guys & try re-entry waivers to meet the cap? That would be awesome. I vote for a boycott, just to kill teams like the Pens.
